    Poll: What do you do?

It seems I spend my life inside an excel spreadsheet, I rely on it so totally for my trading. I've finally decided to hire someone to write a program for me to automate some of my trading. To be done in .net language.

    How to access institutional markets?

Any comments on whether it's feasible or possible for an individual to trade in the corporate debt markets? Has anyone on this board done the kinds of trading I'm talking about and can comment on commissions, liquidity, access, etc? Thanks, Corey

How much should a "good" trader earn?

Prop traders will generally get their account up to a certain level then sweep out profits every month. They do not continuously compound their money within the prop account, so they don't run into the law of diminishing returns.

    How to access institutional markets?

I'm looking to do strictly arbitrage- convertibles, risk arb and spreads between various corporate issues. I'm already doing this with exchange traded debt using $1-2 million of capital in a prop account. This works because I get huge leverage at great rates. I admit to being green about...

    How to access institutional markets?

I'm very interested in pursuing some trading strategies that require access to the corporate debt markets. Since these are not exchange listed securities, how could I gain access to them? All I've looked at so far is bloomberg, since I'd probably want a terminal for analysis. But from...

    Don's Openings, Part 6 2003

Did anyone else cancel thier opening orders today when the spoos tanked 90 seconds before the open? I did, and only re-sent a handfull of orders in the time I had left, no fills. For those of you who left your orders in, I know you made money, but did you make any adjustments or trade...

What makes a pro firm a good pro firm?

That the office or firm has a professional attitude about trading and that they treat you like a professional and they're there with support when needed. They're honest with you. If there are problems, they acknowledge them and prove to you that they are fixing them, not giving lip service...

How much should a "good" trader earn?

But some traders don't have a buying power limit, or have one so high as to be meaningless. For example, my account has over $20 million in buying power. That's just a number, I need that much to enter all my opening orders, but would never be able to just buy 250,000 shares of IBM with it...

How much should a "good" trader earn?

Yes, if you trade with retail margin. This has been discussed many times here in the past. You can't use a 'return on capital' number for a prop trader, it's meaningless. If you start with no capital up front and make $100,000 'from nothing', what does that mean? You could keep $10k or $100k...

    Don's Openings, Part 6 2003

I am adding and removing stocks regularly from my list and the key is to start small and keep notes and stats on them. I don't have much in the way of criteria for what I add, as long as it's over 700k/shrs a day or so, that's all I look at. Then I start out at about 25% my normal size and...

    Assent/Hammer reliability

Yeah, the worst outage I've experienced. VPN connection was ok though. I'm on the citrix servers in LA. They just got it back up, but sdot went down right away.

    Assent/Hammer reliability

I'm remote and run two accounts, one on citrix, one on vpn. I haven't had problems anywhere near what you describe. I think there was one problem causing a disconnect in the last month. Are you sure it's not something to do with servers or networking particular to your office?

I think I'm gonna go to Gambler's Anonymous

I used to feel the same way. For about a 7 year period, my trading was very much like gambling, and deep down inside I knew it, but for whatever reason an addict keeps doing things that are harmful to himself, I kept trying to trade (and always losing money). I craved validation, being right...

    trading mornings

I trade opening orders on the nyse. There's 6 extensive threads on the strategy called "Don's opening orders" in the journals forum. I've been doing it daily for two years and have found it to be a great positive expectancy strategy. You get in multiple positions on the first print of the...

    trading mornings

Daytrading only, not longer term position trades, I'd say I still make 85% of my money in the first 30-60 minutes of the day. Probably even more so now since after the first hour, the days usually seem like an August friday afternoon right until the close.

    Manic Depressives and Trading

My guess is that any long-term successful traders probably are pretty mellow and take the wins and losses and all the other things that come with trading on a pretty even keel. I'd be shocked to see a 15 or 20 year veteran trader who could be described as a manic depressive adrenaline junkie...
