help with writing an effective trading journal

I did that for the first few years I traded full time and think it's very useful. However I'd keep two separate logs. In one, write a synopsis of your day as soon as it's over. This should be a record of how you felt, where you screwed up, the things you did right, what you were thinking...

    Opening Orders - 2008

Yeah, last few months have been really good. OPG's always do well in higher volatility. Sorry, deleted that post, put some wrong info by mistake. $3300 today on about 35,000 shrs. 6 fills, all shorts, 5 wins. PM was something else, had it mixed in there and forgot to filter it out.

It probably was if you didn't notice the huge moc gap print on Friday and adjust for it. I was short it.

    EchoTrade or Hold Brothers

??? They don't let you trade Nasdaq? Someone's feeding you incorrect information. Echotrade has no such restrictions. They require a series 7 and not a 55 because of their exchange registration.

Lots of fills today. HD my worst too, but mostly because I didn't notice the position for a while. I added to a few, re-entered some too, but the longs were pretty crappy. Here's what I had today:

    Going fulltime?

2008 was an exceptionally good year for trading. Be careful about extrapolating this year's gains into the future. There's no way it can stay this good forever.

No one on EliteTrader will beat the market… here is why

The traders I mentioned all are independent, trading their own money, most of them from home. Most trade with prop firms, some are retail with 4:1 margin. Cheap commissions can be an edge with certain strategies, but those commission deals are not that hard to find with some work. One...

No one on EliteTrader will beat the market… here is why

I personally know at least 15 full time traders who have made money almost every month for years on end, no matter what the market environment is. This would encompass millions of transactions, billions of shares traded, 95% of that is purely intra day. All these traders know other traders...

How is everyone doing this year?

Big improvement in consistency for me too this year. I laid a lot of ground work to try to diversify strategies that paid off. I've got 8 separate, distinct strategies now, 5 that I employ every day. That has made a huge difference in smoothing out my equity curve, which reduces drawdown...

    Characteristics of a Successful Trader

IMO, the number one trait that makes a good trader a great trader is the ability to let go of a mental attachment to money. It is very hard to do, and takes time. You have to be able to make rational, almost mechanical decisions based on what is the right way to execute your plan. Proper risk...

    Opening Orders - 2008

Talking in pure cents is meaningless, unless you only trade stocks with the same price range, share size and volatility, and those metrics don't change. A more accurate description would be cents per share traded. If you can pull 1-2 cents profit for every share traded over a long period of...

    Opening Orders - 2008

If you are able to discern a clear direction the market will take after the open, beforehand, does that mean you are taking a futures position before the open too? If not, why?

Cox should be hanged for X the uptick rule

I'm interested in your point about velocity and these people who are "no longer able to humanly "process" the data that they are seeing". Don't you think this rapid increase in velocity is caused by computers running rapid fire algorithms? If we are dealing with price moves over micro seconds...

How to convert Dow Future to Dow opening number?

No one said they were the source for fair value. There are other sites that publish numbers, or you can calculate your own. They will vary because not everyone borrows money at the same rate and there is an interest rate component in the calculation. And who said the fair value number is so...

How to convert Dow Future to Dow opening number?

Indexarb isn't a fly by night sight. I've been using their freely published numbers daily for many years to calculate estimated cash opening price. The above poster is correct, it's cash=futures-premium.

Check out Farley and his take on the stinking black boxes

To a day trader, yes reg-nms and no uptick rule have added to increased intraday volatility. But to suggest these things (along with the ubiquitous evil short seller) have contributed to trillions of dollars of evaporated market value is idiotic. "The SEC took a giant leap backward on July...
