I've found it pretty hard to trade intraday using pre-set stops (arbitrary point values, as opposed to significant support/resistance points etc). If you are trying to catch tops and bottoms you're much better off waiting until you see some kind of blow-off action where stops are getting run...

Markets have a tendency to overshoot and I think currencies are a prime example. The Yen once rose to near 80 to the dollar only to reverse to 145 a couple years later; I don't think any amount of fundamental or technical analysis could have predicted the extent of those moves.

At least don't fall for the "since I'm just beginning and a bit undercapitalized, I'll just scalp for $100/day to get started" trap. You need to save as much capital for yourself rather than give it away to your brokers, if you've been watching the market for a while you know that there are...

I think alot of it has to do with intuition -- for example, today looks like it's turning out to be a textbook trend day, but for me I think too many people anticipated this rotation into the beaten down techs and that it will get a bit crowded towards the close if we get any weakness.

Agreed, give yourself a couple weeks off, enjoy the holidays and take a fresh look at things in the new year. Sometimes it's easy to let losses impair our objectivity and that just compounds the problem -- there's nothing harder than trying to climb out of a hole or trading to "get it back"...

Um how long is long-term? Europeans who had the foresight to buy the Dow at the start of the year are barely beating the return on the 10-yr; so if they buy now they are really going for the long pull? :) Just because the stock market keeps going higher in the face of a lower dollar does not...

Isn't that usually the best time to go short? Buy low, sell high and all that stuff :)
