Is trading Gambling or not .."What say You" Vote here.

I'd say any trader who readily accepts unknown outcomes, whether he calls it gambling or not, is far better off than the trader who is so stubbornly sure of his views or methods that he feels insulted by being called a "gambler". Beyond that, it's a matter of semantics.

Know what you're getting at, but for sake of argument, what's the difference between the above example and any other reason one may have for entering a trade? If you've done all your homework and enter a trade through some method you deem reliable, and it immediately goes against you -- does...

Nickel's comment that "big money could have been made shorting stocks overvalued by publicly available techniques in 2000" is the only thing close to a methodology that I've seen him posit in this thread, and it makes me wonder if he was actually trading before 2000 if he really believes in that...

I guess that's my point -- the term "reliably" can never be concretely defined, nor can any method prove itself to be anything beyond "temporarily" successful. We can go back and forth on whether or not certain techniques are reliable enough, but isn't it a moot point? Say you don't...

Who doesn't buy because they anticipate/predict a move higher, or sell anticipating/predicting a move lower, no matter what the method? Beyond the semantics, this thread is just about one trader's perception of what works vs others. What's the point in answering the question when it is...

Again I ask you: how can you concretely prove that any currently profitable system is not just "temporarily" successful and ultimately "unreliable"? How do you quantify in the first place the necessary profitability and longevity required to achieve "reliability" in your terms? Isn't your...

Yeah I'm just a lurker at 2+2, great site but I'm too slow/dumb to understand many of the more advanced concepts of the game and too shy/lazy to ask those stupid questions to get me started on the right track. And since this is a trading site, I like to fantasize that some...

Just a matter of semantics, isn't it? Who buys without believing price will go up and to a certain minimum extent, for whatever reason it may be? It's just a matter of how far down the predatory chain a method is that determines the extent of profit (and loss). The bigger fish will always...

How long will it take to turn a $5,000 account into $100,000?

Nice post. I share the same perspective on the psychology of markets but funny thing is I don't use a system at all and couldn't daytrade the stock indices for the life of me. Same path, different roads.

Yeah at the casino I'll definitely be "dead fish" so to speak but don't get a chance to play live poker much and think I'll enjoy myself more at some no-limit. I've barely gotten my feet wet online in NL so any kind of advice is appreciated. :)

Any tips on playing no-limit ring games? Practicing on the $25 on PartyPoker for a trip down to AC next week. Is it mostly just a game of laying in wait for a set or better and trapping?

Is data mining for trading patterns impossible?

I think experienced tape reading (including tape "feel" beyond the intraday time frame) can be far more effective than simple S/R patterns, to the point where you can sell after resistance is broken and anticipate the far-side support breaking -- in other words, way ahead of the crowd. But it's...

How long will it take to turn a $5,000 account into $100,000?

I could have thought of alot worse things to call me than "gambler". :) It was just a warning to those with "calculator-itis" to be careful what you wish for; if you really want to figure out the fastest way to take 5K to 100K, you'll find some way to do it, if you try hard enough.

How long will it take to turn a $5,000 account into $100,000?

About a year and a half ago, I had a secondary IB account with just a few grand left in it that I had maxed out on YG contracts. At one point the account equity dipped to $1,250 or so, but gold staged an afternoon rally that left me clear of a liquidation call that day. About 6 months...

From New Market Wizards: During the interview I asked, "Do you trade the markets fundamentally or technically?" That got a good chuckle. He answered, "We trade technically." I responded by asking, "Is fundamental analysis dead?" Dennis answered, with a smile, "We certainly hope not."...

    trend following delusion shattered

Is there any difference in claiming a trader or his methods were just "lucky" or "no better than random" because they failed to maintain a certain level of performance, as opposed to saying they just failed to adapt their methods to changing market conditions? I think so. Back when the...
