source for stock info (mktcap, sector, etc)

I have a similar requirement. I started a screen scraper for Yahoo, but never finished it because of the amount of work required. I am planning to use AAII, but I haven't started yet. http://www.aaii.com/stockinvestor/intro/overview/

I'm Looking for Traders to Invest With

Excellent summary, fs! What I might add, is that the naysayers get to be right. Being right serves us well in most cases, because it is about survival -- survival of the ego/mind, if not survival of the body. But trading well is not about being right, nor knowing what will happen, and...

Advantages of trading as an LLC ?

I had a "C" corporation for 27 years that I set up for my consulting business. When I stopped consulting to focus on trading, I re-analyzed the benefit of having a corporation. What I found was that over 10 years I was spending $2 for every $3 of savings. So I dissolved the corporation to...

    Trading In an IRA

IB does this but with restrictions. You cannot use "debt leverage" in any tax-advantaged account (e.g. IRA, 401[k], pension). You cannot sell securities short, though some brokers allow selling futures.

Industry Fears Proposal in Congress Would Destroy High-Frequency Trading and Liquidit

That's not in the bill as it is currently written. This from the text: (a) Imposition of Tax- There is hereby imposed a tax on each covered securities transaction an amount equal to the applicable percentage of the value of the security involved in such transaction. (b) By Whom Paid- The tax...

I'm Looking for Traders to Invest With

I sent him a PM because I wanted to know the full story. I doubt that I will participate in his program. He has my name now, but I have not [yet] given him my bank account number, Social Security number, or mother's maiden name. Do you think I should change my name just to be safe?:p

    Career/Life Question (CFA,etc.)

If, as you state in the OP, your problem is risk management, then you might not be a close to becoming a good trader as you think. All trading problems are ultimately psychological. You might get some benefit from working with a shrink who specializes in coaching traders. From the way you...

If you are using Linux/Unix, who is your stock data vendor?

Virtualization is a possibility, but it doesn't help much if my objective is to break my dependence on Microsoft. One of my concerns is that Microsoft will find a way to stop XP from working in the future, thereby forcing me to upgrade. I don't like being dependent upon a particular vendor...

If you are using Linux/Unix, who is your stock data vendor?

I am not the OP, but I tried the same thing: TeleChart under both native Wine and Codeweavers. I was told by two knowledgeable people that I would probably not get TeleChart running under Linux (I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex) any time soon, so I gave up [for now]. I have TeleChart paid...

Green on the 1/4% Trading Tax

Unfortunately, traders don't typically join arm-in-arm, march in lockstep, and sing with one voice. Those who are so inclined, don't last long in this business. We're an independent-minded bunch. We can go to Congress claiming to be a group of 200,000 with clout, but it won't take them long...

    Margin Account trading

In a regular margin account, you have immediate access to your funds for trading as soon as you liquidate something. You still have T+3 for withdrawals. The PDT rule has nothing to do with margin/cash. You also need a margin account for selling short. Some brokers (e.g. IBKR) offer a...

Tax question re: day trading in/out same stock

I don't think anybody (including the IRS) knows for sure how this stuff should be handled, because the rules were not created for day traders. In your example, I would not defer the $500 loss. Note that if you decide to wait 30 days before trading xyz again, some or all of that thirty days can...

InveractiveBrokers filled my market NQ order with 4.5min delay

The limit order will always be at least as fast as a market order, and often much faster. The broker has to simulate a market order, and they usually use limit orders for that, changing price as needed to stay close to the bid/ask. As you have seen, in a busy market like today, your order can...

InveractiveBrokers filled my market NQ order with 4.5min delay

According to the IB website, market orders on Globex are simulated. If you want faster execution, you might use a native order type (e.g. limit, stop limit). You could ask for an adjustment, but I doubt that you will get it.
