it all depends on what you are doing with your PC. if you are buying top of the line dual core intel with 6 gb memory to keep couple charts open-you will not notice any difference between your new computer and old P3 :D

Doing intraday back testing for hundreds of stocks without programming knowledge is impossible imho. besides amibroker wealth-lab can do portfolio back testing, but you still need a data for it. qcharts+qcollector works for me. all above mentioned software have free trial.

then-it's a must to create your own application. even if it excel. i would calculate spread then not from last price but between bid on short side and ask on long. plus-signal must be given only if sizes on both sides equal or greater yours. then-there better possibility of getting filled on...

from my expirience better to short first and then -buy long side. spread calculations and everything else(including orders handling) can be done in excel. use IB DDE example . there no guarantee at all. even liquid stocks can't be borrowed from tme to time. not to mention price\size match.

it is, because as been said here, on ET, trading is a business and like in every other business one of our goals is to keep cost of it low... myself-now i'm still getting books data i need for free from MB trading platform now, using their SDK. requires some extra programming work, but-it's ok.

steve, with all due respect-this "service for professionals" been provided by arca for free for years. it mean to me that providing such data for customers did not cost ecn a lot, but -there is some expenses of course. ten bucks -sounds like fair price. but not 155$ for redistributing the data...
