1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

It's only possible if the US elects socialists. The Republicans will never be on board. The establishment Dems like Clinton, etc will not support it. Sanders and a Dem majority in both Houses of Congress would however likely pass a FTT.

MCD - overdone on the upside ?

I would check with Hajimow. He seems pretty dialed into MCD.

National Review tries to take down trump, ends up with tail between their legs apologizing

These National Review guys are such a joke. First, no one likes to be scolded on who to vote for so this will actually help Trump. Secondly, if all the "conservative" causes to take up and fight against, this is what they chose? Clueless guys in DC that overestimate their understanding of the...

    The 30 Year, 10 year, 5 year and 2 Year ETFs .....

30 Yr- EDV or TLT..... EDV is a zero coupon etf and will have the most volatility. TLT is probably closer to 20 years in duration but close enough since you won't find one that is exactly 30 years in duration. Huge liquidity in TLT. 10 Yr- TLH or IEF.... IEF has duration in the 7-10 year...

Anyone notice the calls for "less speculation in commodities" totally died down?

The politicians know better than to think you can solve commodity prices by curbing speculation, but that doesn't mean they can't score political points by doing so when prices are high.

    Oil is Going Bananas

Oil goes nuts to the upside, then eventually goes nuts to the downside, then back up again. It's what oil does and will continue to do.

Should I take a $200k loss to offset profits?

What are the reasons for NOT booking a loss this year? If his only reason is because he "hopes" twitter will take off, that's a horrible strategy, IMO. I feel like you can't go wrong booking a loss as early as possible for in a taxable account. Always reduce your current taxes whenever...

Should I take a $200k loss to offset profits?

This seems like a no-brainer. Take the loss, sit on the sidelines for a month, or buy options if you think the bottom is imminent. What kind of move in the stock price would it take to break-even on your TLH? I can't imagine it's even worth considering not booking the loss.

Iran is about to start selling oil that may cost just $1 a barrel

There could be one more big thrust down, IMO before a bottom is in. It's really only been a few weeks with nearly all bearish predictions on oil. Throughout most of the fall, when oil was in the $40's most "experts" predicted the bottom was in and it would be a matter of no time before oil...

Financial Transaction Tax and the future of HFT

Everything the government tries to do turns into a debacle, and this would be no different. A good rule of thumb is to assume that whatever the name of the "bill" is, the exact opposite will happen. So when they named Obamacare "the affordable care act" you knew we would see double digit cost...

How will bond-owners' lifestyles be supported?

Bonds aka debt is a two way street. It takes a borrower and a lender. If one thinks that borrowing money is rnslavement, then don't borrow money. I have seen borrowing money to be a very useful tool in creating wealth in the business world.

How will bond-owners' lifestyles be supported?

How will the bond payer's lifestyle be affected if they are unable to pay the bond owners? Will there be a new bond owner willing to step up and finance the bond payer's needs? Probably, but at a much greater cost. Is there a magic wand that CB's can waive and make the problems disappear...
