How to convince wife to let me trade full time?

Why not have the wife pick up a job as well (assuming she doesn't already work)...and if she can find something with health-care benefits, so much the better.

    SSFs and volume

I had expected to pay up a bit. The purpose behind the question was to see if I could find a good alternative method to Puts for trading short in my IRA. I have IRAs with both IB and TOS, so the SSF method is possible with the IB account. The spreads on the stocks I watch are pretty...

    SSFs and volume

Does anybody use Single Stock Futures? I've read that even though posted volumes can be ultra low, liquidity is not really a problem since the market maker simply turns around and hedges with the underlying. Can anybody comment on this approach? Thanks,

Who has the best free charting site

Yep, I second this as well. I also use Bigcharts since you can easily get the option data in a nicely readable format. It's not nearly as configurable as others, but it does what I need it to.

Are you sure that's not the event-horizon of a blackhole? Perhaps Stephen is "Hawking" some new trading systems. (ba-dum-dum)

The GooBot: Diary A DIY Trading Platform

TOOL UPDATE I found a couple of nifty new tools to help with my development process. Mantis Originally I was looking for a bug tracker but they were either way over kill for what I need (Bugzilla) or were proprietary. However, then I stumbled upon a nice little web-based bug tracker called...

The GooBot: Diary A DIY Trading Platform

Hi Phil, thanks for stopping by. I'm not too familar with Delphi, as all my experience is in either C, C++, or C# (no D's allowed. :) ). As far as look and feel go, I'm kind of modeling my GUI after TOS (but less cluttered) for the interface and I really like the look and feel of the online...

    Price Action Strategies

In my opinion, I would think you'd be able to be a bit more aggressive with your target in this case, given that: 1) The upper trend line is sloping downwards. 2) The lower trendline was basically ignored in the previous break, so I think a good target would be the 8800 area. A possible...

    E-mini tutorials?

I know IB has raised their minimum to open an account (even a few years back it was only $2k), but I'm not sure where you came up with $40k. I know a guy that trades the e-mini occasionally and he opened an account less than 6 months ago and I know he didn't need $40k to open it. As far as I can...

The GooBot: Diary A DIY Trading Platform

When I first started, I wrote the charting component myself from scratch, however it was much more work than I had anticipated and so I switched to a 3rd party control called ZedGraph. It's an open source charting app and extremely well written and documented, plus it's pretty powerful once you...

The GooBot: Diary A DIY Trading Platform

Yes. I currently use the IB application interface (API) to pull quote and historical data to give real-time charts. On my previous version, I just had minute charts, but for this version, I want to use tick charts and maybe range bars as well, and even though IB isn't true tick data (as opposed...

The GooBot: Diary A DIY Trading Platform

CHOOSE YOUR WEAPONS: Before I write a bit about what I hope to accomplish, let's examine some of the tools we'll need as we go on our merry way. There's a lot of high quality open source stuff out there, so I'll make use of that when I can...even though I'm building my own house, that doesn't...

The GooBot: Diary A DIY Trading Platform

Sure, but hold yer horses, hoss, we ain't even out of the gate yet. :) I'm not going to bother with anything but open source. Let's face it, the market for something like this would not be that of Halo 3...

The GooBot: Diary A DIY Trading Platform

I read a comment once about a film director who makes movies he would like to see, so I've decided to start a journal I would like to read with the thought that somebody else might find it interesting as well. It's not strictly an automated trading platform, so I though Journals might be a bit...

why do people recommend covered calls.

There are differences: 1) With a put you get no dividends. 2) Covered calls are the most basic option strategy there is and one of the few you can get on a 401k. Cash secured puts is a step up from that and often a broker will not approve it for you. I trade several stocks that have...

Should I keep trading this system?

Just out of curiosity, what is a "win" and a "full" loss? You said a "small" loss ends up being about 4 points. What is the ratio of a win to a full loss? Are your profit targets fixed, or via a trailing stop? Your winning percentage seems pretty decent, so unless you are taking quick profits...

What to screen for in stocks to swing trade

I've found it easier to watch a basket of 25-30 stocks and wait for my setups rather than try to screen the entire universe of stocks which meet my setup criteria. This basket is fairly diverse across industries and contains the main ETFs (QQQQ, IWM, XLF, etc), a bunch of commodity stocks (Gold...

What stocks under $20/share pays highest dividends ?

ERF and PGH are Canadian trusts that pay a monthly dividend (right around 8-9% annual at the moment). ERF is right around $20 and PGH is about $10.50. Both are optionable, which is how I play them (covered calls).
