Without Citadel deal, Sowood investors may have lost 100%

Same thing that happened to LTCM. Most of their bets were guaranteed to converge (they had some directional bets, which was wrong, but that didn't break the bank). If they had enough capital or used less leverage, they would have survived and made money. But when you assume spreads can only...

Without Citadel deal, Sowood investors may have lost 100%

Because OPM is an option. You, as the manager, go for double or nothing. You lose 100% and you haven't lost anything (except time and some operating expenses). You double the funds value, your 20% of profits is worth a few hundred million. There's little money in playing it safe. The...

AIG Subprime Debt May Cost $2.3 Billion, Analysts Say

They can't be worthless since they are back by collateral (houses, land). However, even if the loss is only 2.3B as they say, they could have to put up more money to take hold of the property until they can turn around and sell it. The real risk may not be the loss, but the lack of credit...

AIG Subprime Debt May Cost $2.3 Billion, Analysts Say

Also, how much are those mortgage hedge funds leveraged? With a 7% writeoff rate, using too much leverage (Bear Stearns) could kill off a few funds.

AIG Subprime Debt May Cost $2.3 Billion, Analysts Say

Interesting hidden piece of news in this article: "In a ``worst-case scenario,'' AIG may lose $2.3 billion from its investments in subprime mortgage bonds as well as loans given to borrowers with poor or limited credit, A.G. Edwards Inc. analysts in St. Louis said today in a report." "AIG...

Bear market is here?? (worst than 87 crash)

I don't trade hourly or daily. I trade weekly. And that was a great week to be short. If a system was long instead of short, that sucks big time. It still may be a good system, but I have my doubts. Of course, the system could have been neutral....

    Excel System Development

Quotein looks quite reasonable and I am definitely impressed by Openecry. If I was starting from scratch, I'd try the Quotein/Openecry combo since the programming seems a lot easier. But since I already have all my programming done, I'll stay put for now. But if IB ever becomes unmanageable...

    Excel System Development

Wow. I really like their Excel interface. However, it's futures only trading. No equities. Also, I didn't find a way to get index quotes (I use interest rates in my system to trade the ES and ZN/AB). So I'd have to get a separate quote server.
