Senate to pass unemployment benefits up to 99 weeks

Passing unemployment benefits is perhaps more effective than tax cuts because unemployment benefits get spent more quickly (turning into economic activity). If I am mid-income, with a job, and receive a tax cut, I just may save that money. If the banks are not going to lend it out, then the...

Novagold NG small cap gold miner

Happy I didn't wait. Bought some at 6.42 today. $20 is very doable. And if gold were to double (assuming it became bubbly) while costs stayed the same, that puts you at a 22B valuation (20x today's value). Chop that in half to discount, and you are at a $60 price target. Ten times price...

Novagold NG small cap gold miner

Fascinating little stock. 15m oz of reserves. Lets say $500 margin per oz. Thats 7.5B. Discount that in half, 3.75B. Looks like a triple based off market cap. http://www.novagold.com/upload/investor_info/NG_FactSheet.pdf The Paulson and Soros $$$ are a vote of confidence in management...

I made my last 438 k mortgage payment just now. My bank doesn't seem happy.

I like this comment. The 'market portfolio' (probably the most accepted form of stock 'investing' versus 'gambling' out there) is still a bet: that GDP growth continues and monetary aggregates likewise continue to increase. Just a glorified form of hopeful trend following (ie 1982-2000).

    Is GOLD (/silver/etc) a bubble?

Every anemic jobs report we see is supportive of continued low interest rates, increased central bank accomodation - supportive of gold prices. Most of the gold miners out there are in between a 10-15 PE, hardly what i'd call overvalued, and represent a great value, especially amid still...

Fed's Interest on Reserves and Inflationary Spirals

OK. Here we go. The Fed is able to raise rates without selling its MBS portfolio as it does have the ability to short circuit the money multiplier. So even if they lengthen the duration of the portfolio, it is not necessarily inflationary since they can raise IOR/Fed Funds to a level where...

They only cost a quarter. I only see 3500 or so trade on that strike. Perhaps someone sold puts when the stock was much lower and wanted to free up margin for other trades?

Health Insurers cutting their own throat

I think $3 out of every $10 collected in insurance premiums goes to paying for the insurance company to run & take profits. A medicare pay-in model would right off the bat reduce individual health insurance costs by 30%. Add some tort reform and electronic medical record mandating to reduce...
