Daily P&L goes up but excess liquidity goes down

Hey. Thanks for your input. I only trade stocks, but some of them have high margin requirements particularly for short positions. So maybe that's what is going on in my case.

Daily P&L goes up but excess liquidity goes down

Hi. I noticed that sometimes my daily P&L will go up but the excess liquidity will go down. Does someone know why this could be happening? Thank you.

Cash quantity stock orders via the API

    Yep. Makes sense.

Cash quantity stock orders via the API

Hi. I was wondering if it is possible to place a cash quantity stock order via the API. As illustrated here (https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/software/tws/usersguidebook/specializedorderentry/dynamic_cash_quantity.htm), the idea is that the number of shares would be calculated dynamically...

Minimizing the initial margin impact from many simultaneous orders

Another thought that I had is that since I am using MKT orders, maybe the prices move against me, between the time I run the whatif check and actually execute the order (which causes the margin requirements to be violated). I will look into this more, and maybe try placing cashqty orders, where...

Minimizing the initial margin impact from many simultaneous orders

Thank you. I think I understand how it is intended to work. But for whatever reason, it doesn't. The what-if feature does make it easier to figure out which orders will increase, and which orders will decrease the margin. So I will reserve to splitting the orders into margin decreasing and...

Minimizing the initial margin impact from many simultaneous orders

So this is interesting. I tried pre-submitting the orders with the whatif flag and all of them are returned as compliant. I.e. the projected INITIAL MARGIN after the order is filled is less than the projected Equity with loan value. But when I try to submit the orders all at once, I still get a...

Minimizing the initial margin impact from many simultaneous orders

Actually that does not make any sense, it is probably due to the value of some other positions (that don't drive the P&L) moving against me. I wish there was a way to look up maintenance margin for individual positions, so it would be easier to track what is going on.

Minimizing the initial margin impact from many simultaneous orders

Another weird thing I noticed is that sometimes my account Net Liquidity and daily P&L will go up, but excess liquidity will go down. I imagine that this is because I hold some long positions that require 100% maintenance margin, and as the price for those stocks increases, so does the...

Minimizing the initial margin impact from many simultaneous orders

I hear you. But I don't think this is how IB verifies that the initial margin requirements are met. I have about 20K of excess liquidity in my account and none of the orders I am trying to place exceed a 10K dollar amount, most are much less. I also don't necessarily get rejections on the...

Minimizing the initial margin impact from many simultaneous orders

Yeah. That's what I am thinking. I just need to figure out how to adjust and re-submit the orders on the fly via the API.

Minimizing the initial margin impact from many simultaneous orders

Hi everyone. I often get some of my orders rejected due to the initial margin requirement being exceeded, when I try to place many orders at once. Usually, it is by some tiny number. I tried reducing the number of shares on the larger orders or putting position-closing orders first in the queue...

Interesting. I am not trading options yet. But this should make for a good bedtime reading :) Thanks!

Getting around the special margin requirements

I hear you. I may have exaggerated a bit. I am trading odd lots though. Can you please elaborate why the lot size may matter risk-wise? More precise position sizing? VaR is the lower 5% of the distribution of returns, right? "Go long or short the synthetic if you're holding overnights." Tbh I...

Getting around the special margin requirements

@guru Hey man. Thanks for your input. I will look into the Reg T rules, as you suggest. I am pretty sure the requirement is less that 100% though, for longs at least. I also understand that some brokers set margin requirements based of the stock's price, as you said. In the end, I don't really...
