    Windows XP: Home or Pro?

Pro & Home versions are basically the same. Some features are only available on Pro, such as certain drive partitioning and networking features. There are more items, but not really important for most regular users. Basically, if you have to ask, you probably are not advanced enough to...

Is it worth it to pony up $200 more for a Pentinum4 laptop instead of an AMD?

Here is something to consider - There were in fact a number of problems with AMD chips and Windows 9x OS. We have a specific test we have the users do when we get certain errors from users on Win9x machines. However, those issues do NOT exist on Windows NT, 2000, XP. So, if you hear bad...

    IB and TWS questions

    1) Time & Sales - TWS data is not true tick by tick, which would be required for Time & Sales. 2) TWS is quite different from other systems and does take some time to get used to. Many say that once they get a good feel for it, they like it much better than the traditional direct access...

Quote Tracker - anyone having problems today?

Gordo - the error is fixed in the newer version. As for the quote problems, there was an issue with a site that we used for syncronizing the time. That causes all kinds of problems including quotes being displayed incorrectly, quotes being inactive and data stopping. To fix: 1) WebUpdate...

ISP Reliability - How do I test it?

no_agenda, doing a ping will get you the response time right at that point. Trace route will get you the route - the hops, and the corresponding response times, but again - only at the time that the command is called: tracert yahoo.com You would want to use something that uses repeating...

    Island ECN question

GreenDog, I had a good laugh reading the responses to your question :) There may be other reasons, but one could be if you were buying a low # of shares. If you place an order for 50 shares, it would stay on ISLAND and would not display on full Level II. I do not know if the example of 5,000...

    Medved Quote Tracker

that is correct. we do not want to increase the memory usage, which would occur if we were to store that extra field with every quote

    Medved Quote Tracker

disregard the 2nd number and the % reading. QT does not have any special handling for tick. For tick, the last number fluxuates quite a bit, so the amount of change from previous close (the 2nd number) and the percentage are meaningless. You only care about the first number

IB TWS - Quick question ...

if you are using Windows NT/2000/XP, just hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, then select Lock Workstation button - should be the very first one. The other option is to set your screen saver up so that it requires a password to turn off

    Medved Quote Tracker

Dustin, What exactly are you referring to? The exchange of the last trade, or MM IDs of the trades? We do not have MM IDs in the datafeeds, so cannot display that. Also, there are memory issues to consider, so we would rather not increase the amount of data that needs to be stored for every...

    Reuters/DJ news?

Reuters charges an arm and a leg, so it will be pretty expensive from most sources. For Dow Jones, you can subscribe to IQFeed: http://www.quotetracker.com/iqfeed and use it through QuoteTracker for news as well as for quotes. IQFEED also have other news sources available. Another...

    OT: getting rid of spyware

the ad should not load at all with a properly blocked popup. If you block the URL, you are not blocking the popup. You are blocking the page that shows up on the popup, which is why you are still seeing something come up. A good popup killer will make it so you will not see any popup at all

    OT: getting rid of spyware

You can turn off JavaScript, but doing so will break too many web sites for it to be practical. Get one of the free popup blockers. Oh, there is one I forgot to mention that is free: Naviscope - http://www.naviscope.com/ Its pretty simple and has some nice features for browsing message...

    OT: getting rid of spyware

Win ME does not get affected by the messenger ads because it does not have that service running at all. Yours sound like web based popup ads - most likely coming from one of the browser pages that you have running, or a spyware component. Since you ran ad-aware, which is usually pretty...

    OT: getting rid of spyware

No, most ad blockers detect the request for the ad and redirect it to a local blank ad instead. For popups, what they do is detect the JavaScript code that is used to open the popup and modify it to cripple it prior to passing it on to your browser, so the popup window is never launched in the...

    OT: getting rid of spyware

True, the most common issues are: SPAM - I found that using SpamNet plugin for Outlook and Outlook Express in combination with my own rules in Outlook blocks 95% of the spam (I get about 250 spam messages a day) VIRUS - Norton Anti-Virus is one of the best ones. SPYWARE - Common sense...

freealways, what does giving out your name and email address have to do with popups? spam email is a completely unrelated issue to the one being asked about.

BTW, if the popup is not a web page, but just a windows dialog box, then the problem is not spyware. Here is how to turn those off: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp

    OT: getting rid of spyware

What exactly do you mean when you say you are getting spyware from that site? I looked there and there is no software there. Are you getting some software installed on your computer or are you looking at cookies in your browser?
