How to handle dividends in SPY

I am playing around with buy and sell signals, and buying and shorting the S&P500. I wanted to go back before 1993 when SPY was first created, so I was simulating buying and selling the SPX (^GSPC on Yahoo). I would take a certain amount of dollars and divide by the current SPX to get the number...

How to handle dividends in SPY

So you're saying to ignore the divvies? If I run the test with SPX data and simulate buying and shorting "shares" of SPX the short term results track SPY pretty closely, especially during periods between dividends. Over longer periods the results don't track very well.

How to handle dividends in SPY

I've been playing around with analyzing historical data on SPX and SPY. I downloaded the data from Yahoo for ^GSPC and SPY. Since ^GSPC doesn't pay dividends and SPY does the results diverge quite a bit over 10 or 15 years. (BTW, I've searched this site and Googled around, but still haven't...

    and the next bailout is..

Banks do print money. It's called "making a loan". Bernanke is even proposing taking the "reserve" part out of fractional reserve banking, allowing banks unlimited power to print as much as they want.

    Getting exercised

Your broker may have meant that if you exercise an option there is no charge, but you still have to pay the commission to buy or sell the stock. And the correct terminology is, if you are long an option you exercise it, if you are short you are assigned. Here is what thinkorswim has on the...

A High Income Strategy for a Retirement Portfolio

How do you like VectorVest? Edit: Forgot to say, the OP might also want to check into GNMAs. I ALMOST bought a GNMA fund in 2008 when IIRC the yield was around 5% (I think it was Vanguard). I haven't checked the yield lately. GNMAs are explicitly backed by the government so they should be as...

    Krugman on Health Reform Myths

The difference is that Grayson's plan is to be paid for by the users, not taxes. BTW, how is private insurance not a form of socialized medicine that "conservatives" are so vocal about? You pay your premium, but if you have a major problem it it "other people's money" that pays for your...

    Krugman on Health Reform Myths

I believe that is part of Denninger's "4 Point Plan". Too bad he didn't put a link in the article - he usually does. BTW, the insurance companies hate competition, that's why they are behind the government's legislation to restrict it.

    Krugman on Health Reform Myths

A Democrat Congressman from Florida just introduced a Public Option. Funny, it's not getting much air play on either side. http://market-ticker.org/archives/2075-Alan-Grayson-Tossed-Out-A-Hardball.html Posted by Karl Denninger in Health Reform at 14:20 Alan Grayson Tossed Out A...

Get Set for Higher State, Local Taxes???????

Only one or two problems with it. California sends more $$$ to Washington than it gets back, so they are currently subsidizing the other states. And there are no fiscally strong states at this point, just ones who are weaker than others (except maybe North Dakota or ???).

Is it a good time to buy an investment property

If you do decide to become a landlord, NEVER rent to someone you know. My sister bought a couple of houses to rent a few years ago. Her boyfriend talked her into letting his daughter (and her boyfriend) rent one of them. She almost never paid the rent, got pregnant while there and the boyfriend...
