ECHOtrade Open House in San Francisco

The charts in sterling look pretty good now. The Hyperfeed data feed leaves something to be desired though. Like for instance my friend, who also trades with echo, was commenting on the high of the tick yesterday. I told him the number he was mentioning was way off according to FirstAlert...

    Don's Openings, Part 6 2003

The fair value number published by HL Camp has to do with the premium that futures have over the cash index. It's derived using the current interest rate, the dividends of the index (S&P 500) and how long until expiration of the futures contract. That's why it doesn't change during the day...

    Don's Openings, Part 6 2003

My fill rate for this month is at 9%, vs. historical average of 10%. I've been using a .9% envelope a lot this month as opposed to the 1% I almost always use. The opening gaps this month have definitely been smaller than usual, with only one day with a gap more than 1%. If you want more...

    TA becomes self defeating??

I agree, keep it simple. All technical indicators are derived from only three things: time, volume and price. Whatever indicators you put on your charts, you're just looking at the information from a different angle. It's easy to suffer from information overload.

    hedge fund blow up !

From Realmoney.com's columnist conversation: Paul Kedrosky 1/24/03 12:15 AM ET "The fund made three big, awry bets: NTT Docomo (short); NTT (long); and Sega (long to the tune of $150-mm)"

    hedge fund blow up !

There was a rumour mentioned today on realmoney.com that they had the whole wad in directional bets in three stocks that all went wrong.

28 million? That's amazing. When Cramer was still there they were running 400 million. I'm sure there is an interesting story behind the fund and the apparently strained relations between Toddo and Jimbo.

    Don's Openings, Part 6 2003

I was long T on the open yesterday. I don't trade the open on stocks in the news, but I tried this one as an experiment. It was profitable for a few minutes by about 15 cents, but because the gap was so big, I was holding for a bigger move. When he broke the opening print, there wasn't much...

    Todd Harrison is writing again

I'm starting to play his calls using SPY. Decide the size of the position I'd like to have and add 1/4 of that with every 25% change in his conviction level. He gives his stop area in the s&p so I'm going to try it out for a while. I've read him since day one at realmoney and he's bang on...

How many daytraders are still out there?

Absurd? Do the math, 1 million shares a month, .8 cents/ share =$96,000 a year in commissions. Seems pretty average to me.

How many daytraders are still out there?

The freedom of swing trading is a big plus. I only swing traded for a year and liked being done by 10:00 every day. That's an intangable and each person has to decide how much it's worth to them. But when people talk about percent return on capital, net cents per share traded, average win...

Are there such a thing as TOO MANY monitors?

It totally depends on your trading style. I have 7 plus a laptop and could easily accomodate one or two more. I trade sectors and like to have a few charts from several of them up at once. It just makes it easy to scan them and spot moves just taking shape. Once in a while I might be focused...

How many daytraders are still out there?

Some of you sound like a members of the general public in your stereotypes about daytrading. That word has a stigma attached to it as a result of the late 90's and the popular press it received. But it's a stereotype that is all wrong. If you are a professional trader, then trading is...

    Prop Firms That Care?

I can't imagine shops that pressure you to trade more, that is just so transparent and obviously lame. Rebate trading I can understand because that's what the whole business model depends on. If you want someone who will train you and follow up and spend time on you and actually care, I...

Neovest First Alert, Any other alternatives?

Is your FA version a subscription directly from Neovest? I get mine from my clearing firm, they maintain the data and I have to call them if there is a problem. I think it must be an older version because it doesn't include things like the new sector scans. I'd like to get the same thing...

Neovest First Alert, Any other alternatives?

I'm using the full version of FirstAlert provided by my clearing firm. Some of the filters I run scan the entire nyse every 2 seconds. I tried the full version from Neovest and wasn't able to do this since nyse was removed as a group. I was told that they would be offering entire exchange...

Which is the NYSE uptick rule @Open?

If yesterday closed on an uptick, you can short at today's open if the stock opens unchanged or higher. If yesterday closed on a downtick, you can only execute a short if the stock opens up .01 or more.

    Don's Openings, Part 6 2003

I pretty much always use a 1% envelope, but with the flat, quiet openings we've been having lately, I've tightened up to .9%. Trying to keep my fill rate at the historical average of 10%. I'm using about 60 stocks right now.
