    Fading yourself as a strategy

just fade your emotional instincts during market extremes e.g. don't sell or hedge during a panic, instead take a small long position and don't buy more when shit is flying and everyone is talking about $100 oil and S&P 1300 (e.g. two weeks ago), instead pick up some hedges for your...

Best place to park cash for intermediate periods?

thanks i am afraid you are probably right...during the last collapse everything seemed correlated. The only exception was probably the dollar and treasury bonds, which were correlated but inversely so. The problem with moving into those is by the time i do they will already be inflated...

Best place to park cash for intermediate periods?

I knew i could turn to ETers for some solid advice on this matter. I thought it was a pretty simple question...i would think there would be one of the bond etfs that would make sense in this situation, rather than straight cash. Suppose i better go somewhere and ask someone who knows...

Markets on alert after (Spanish) bank bailout

That is not good at all. Now i am worried.

Best place to park cash for intermediate periods?

I am setting aside 25% of my portfolio for swing trading on the downside. I know from experience that can be volatile. I plan to put about 25%-75% in safer investments during confirmed market weakness (which may mean simple cash if i cant determine a better option).

Markets on alert after (Spanish) bank bailout

Everything is fine stop trying to cause a panic. For example, my Fios connection is still producing excellent entertainment. Also my microwave still works.

Best place to park cash for intermediate periods?

I should have added that I want the cash to be fairly liquid. I will be moving it in and out of active trading strategies, but there will be long but undefined periods where it is uninvested.

Best place to park cash for intermediate periods?

Lets say one was to pursue a trading strategy that might keep them invested only 70% of the time, with decently long stretches where significant sums of cash would not be actively put to work. Further, lets assume these inactive periods are generally during market downturns or during periods of...

    HuggieBear's Thread of Public Shame

Thanks Donna :) Actually, i covered early Monday morning and got out flat. However, I didn't sleep a wink sunday night and was down huge overnight. Just got lucky to get out on a bump early morning. Anyway, at that point I had already done all the damage, i was just trying to...

    HuggieBear's Thread of Public Shame

Thanks man...thats not a bad idea. I am reserving 25% of my portfolio for "swing trades at the extremes". For example, i shorted VXX at the open this morning and i think that is going to pay off nicely. I'm not convinced oil is quite there yet. Certainly didn't like its action today...

    HuggieBear's Thread of Public Shame

So here is the conclusion, with all the gory details. Basically, I lost about $100k in 3 days...it all started with a 20% 1-day draw-down and then more mistakes furiously trying to make it back. I did some real damage, going from up 85% on the year to flat or a little bit down at this...

    HuggieBear's Thread of Public Shame

Here is a peak into how depressing my last two weeks have been: My stats for this week: +2% change in portfolio value -35% MDD during the week 5% of portfolio value = Total commission cost for the week (the +2% in portfolio change is after commissions) Yes, i ended the...

Good cautionary opinion...thanks. I was just thinking how crude is going to stay under pressure as long as the euro is collapsing and the dollar is going up. Do have to remember that anything can happen...

    CL Redux

That would mean we are in a real global slump, with slow or minimal growth. I would suggest that would mean the DOW goes back to 8000. It seems like the industrial and economic numbers are suggesting more rapid expansion...i don't doubt it could all disappear as stimulus dries up or Euro...

Schiz, i would say your guess is ludicrous but you've been spot on to date. All i can say is, if we see $60 oil in the middle of driving season, there will be some cheap equities to be had. Or cheap oil, even :) Personally, im slowing accumulating a large crude position expecting a...
