Is this correct about market makers?

I am no expert and I don't know the exact rules market makers have to adhere (like how often they have to provide inside quotes) but I do know that market makers are not in the business of trading the underlying so they would not own a big % of any given stock. That would expose them to too much...

Good faith violation in retirement account

I am trying to figure out why Fidelity has to insist on enforcing good-faith rules in my 401k account. I have an IB IRA "margin" account and they don't care. (It's not a true margin account since I can't borrow but trades settle immediately). I am thinking about moving my account from...

    Non-institutional stock holders

I guess I asked the question for a couple reasons. First, I thought no one buys stocks directly anymore since it's easier to diversify thru ETFs and mutual funds. But it looks like one third (or so) of many largecap shares held by individual investors. For Walmart, it's more than two thirds...

    Non-institutional stock holders

I am curious who are the non-institutions (and non-funds) holding stocks. For example, I find it hard to believe that 38% of INTC is owned by individual investors (62% is held by funds): http://finance.yahoo.com/q/mh?s=intc&ql=1

    otc automation

I am trading (sort of market-making) about 1,000 low-volume non-OTC stocks. I've been eyeing PinkSheets but I am afraid to touch those stocks. I can't figure out what the requirements are for your order to be 'visible'. Here is one example: http://www.otcmarkets.com/stock/TOVC/quote (by the...

    trading low-volume stocks

Here is another interesting chart showing my equity curve so far this year. Starting with $39K and ending at $51K. The step up in the middle is me adding $5K to the account rather than a mega-leveraged trade :) As you can see, even though my system can't find many opportunities to deploy the...

    trading low-volume stocks

I would like to report my adventures trading low-volume stocks. I've been doing that for about a couple years now. It was easy at first but is getting more difficult now because of lower volatility. My system made 50% in 6 months of 2009 and 75% in 2010. I am up about 17% so far this year which...

    Yahoo Finance historical data down?

I've been using them for a couple years. The data is good and it's free. For some reason, they haven't updated their data for a couple days now. Anyone heard anything? Are they shutting it down? http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?a=03&b=28&c=2006&d=03&e=28&f=2011&g=d&s=ge Showing Apr 26th...

    Put-call ratio strategy for SPY/ES

Has anyone figured out a good strategy for that? It seems there is an edge for a day trade when the market goes up and the p/c ratio goes down (both quite a bit) but the number of such days is pretty small (<50 over the last 10 years). Just curious if other folks have built better...

    SSFs: why no love?

I can't figure out why SSFs never took off. Looks like an ideal trading vehicle. Flexible leverage, no day-trading restrictions, can be traded in an IRA account, you can short all you want. The volumes are miniscule however. Why? PS I am considering trading SPY futures in my smallish account...

Pre-market / After Hours ES PA....The hidden gem uncovered

Forgot to add a chart for my could-have-been-perfect trade. As I said I shorted at 5pm on the 25th and was shooting for 1061. Why? it's just above a 50% retracement of the preceding rally. The market actually dipped a bit lower but I got shaken out just before 10 am. As they say, trailing...

Pre-market / After Hours ES PA....The hidden gem uncovered

I've been making a lot of great calls myself lately. Such as I shorted at 1184 AH on May 25th and set 1161 as my target. That could have been a beautiful trade indeed. Except I added a trailing stop and got stopped out at a small loss :( Anyhow, I think this kind of easy target setting will...

    Will I get 'busted'?

HMPR 2010-05-24, 09:00:01 BUY 400 0.6700 268. Total HMPR (Bought) 400 0.6700 268.00 Don't laugh at the amount please :) I have a system for trading low-volume stocks and it's not meant to trade 'huge'. Looks like I got (partially but nicely) filled in pre-market hours. The stock...

Who are the commercials in SP/ES?

I am trying to understand who are the commercial hedgers in these markets. Whether they are smart or dumb money esp. with regard to large speculators (hedge funds, etc). Any insight would be appreciated.

SPY vs IVV vs the index (vs ES)

I kind of expect all three to match but no such luck. Why are SPY and IVV different? Today, 4/27 SPY: Open: 120.65, Close: 118.48 IVV: Open: 121.04, Close: 118.87 It seems that SPY is a bit lower than IVV for some reason. ^GSPC: Open: 1209.92 Close: 1183.71 which doesn't match...
