    Shorting stocks with IB

Some ECNs will not accept odd lot orders, so you are limiting your broker's choices. With Nasdaq stocks (and eventually with listed stocks too), all you can do to get short is send an offer. Somebody will take your stock or they won't. On Nasdaq, you will see people trading at or above your...

Super fast trading - all automatic

Other games and the Beginning Trader

There are parallels between blackjack and trading: lots of math and statistics, positive expectancy, luck, pressure, attention to detail. I know at least one card counter who hasn't been caught [yet]. I also heard a story about a fellow who developed a systems for baccarat that was based on...

Many traders, particularly in options, have also been casino blackjack players.

Def - Debit spreads in IRA's at IB

I ran into this a few years ago with another broker. The only way they could allow me to write options, either naked or in combinations, was to enable my account for margin trading. Then it was up to me to make sure I didn't do any disallowed trades (i.e. "debt leveraged"). If I had done a...

IB requirement for uptick for short ETF

The uptick rule is an SEC requirement, and it does not apply to broad-based composites (i.e. with ten or more components). I was not aware that IB requires an uptick for shorting ETFs. If that is true, it is probably a limitation of their software. I know other brokers have had such...

    Day Trading stocks with IB

I am not currently trading AMEX stocks. How I would rout orders would depend on my trading strategy. I think the AMEX specialist operates like the NYSE specialist, so I would probably use AMEX routing. Using SMART routing with listed stocks will sometimes get a better price or faster fill...

    IB's year end statement

I too was annoyed by the delay in receiving the yearend statement from IB. Then I realized that there is nothing in the YE statement that is not in the twelve monthly statements (which are already out).

    Day Trading stocks with IB

I had a really hard time learning to use the TWS. You might take a look at some of the third-party tools such as ButtonTrader or NinjaTrader. Good luck! [Richard]

    Day Trading stocks with IB

I frequently trade NYSE stocks via IB in the last few seconds before 4pm Eastern, several thousand shares, and have no problem getting filled on market orders. Limit, IOC, and sweep-to-fill are another matter. Fill reports on NYSE and AMEX trades are always painfully slow, but that is the...

Trading alone vs with small group

It sounds like an n-legged sack race. It is hard to make ventures work out with more than one entrepeneur. Everybody has their own ideas. That there is success or failure at stake just makes people argue harder for their own ideas. What works best is one boss, and the rest employees. Been...

Trading alone vs with small group

I think trading is inherently a lonely business. Other people think what we are attempting is foolhardy, unless they know we are successful. Then they envy us. I don't wish to be pitied as a fool, nor to be wheedled and pleaded to share my "secrets". If I associate with other traders, I...

    Trading stocks vs. Trading commodities

I believe the futures industry is changing. In a few years, the pits may be all gone. When the happens, the clerking experience will be wasted. I would also be wary of the clerking job, if you don't know and trust the employer really well. All you are interested is the after-clerking...

Question; Can they snoop our computers ?

Without outgoing traffic, a computer isn't very useful. ZoneAlarm is for the totally paranoid. It's good software but overkill IMHO. If I had reason to suspect something evil was happening, I would install ZoneAlarm. Otherwise, I try not to worry about it.

Question; Can they snoop our computers ?

Any time you run software that you didn't write, and have an Internet connection open, you run a risk (however small) that the program will do something you don't want. There are some applications, such as Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp), that will block outgoing...
