    IB Unstable Again

My systems are operating normally. It looks like the problems are server-specific rather than system-wide.

    Index Vol Breakout Systems

Actually, the OP said that he is looking for an intraday breakout system. I have been researching automated, high frequency systems recently. So far I have been coming up empty-handed. I have studied both breakout, momentum, and mean-reversion approaches mostly in shorter timeframes. I...

IB: Misc Fee with multiple accounts

To extend the discussion, the advantage of having an IRA at IB is that they offer a restricted margin account for IRA that bypass the T+3 settlement rules but disallow the use of leverage. That means you can daytrade in an IRA. Whether that is a good idea or not only the account owner can...

IB: Misc Fee with multiple accounts

O.K., I am happy to go with your understanding. IB should have the last word anyway. It's nice to know I can have a second login without paying extra.

IB: Misc Fee with multiple accounts

By "multiple logins", I mean multiple user names for the same account. Obviously there will be at least one login for each account. I have two accounts, but I have not [yet] tried a second login for either. It is my understanding that each additional login is subject to the $10 minimum which...

IB: Misc Fee with multiple accounts

I believe the minimum fee ($10 as I recall) is per login. It is possible (but not generally known) to have more than one login per account. IB does not credit trades for one login against the minimum fee for another.

IB unbundled NYSE fees are wrong starting 10/1/07

It's hair raising! I'm still operating bundled and will probably stay that way due to threads such as this one.

C vs Java programming for IB

I agree. The best language is usually the one you know (except maybe FORTRAN or COBOL:p ). People have written systems for IB's API in a wide variety of languages including newer tools like Python and Matlab. I use Delphi. There is also a very active developer community for the API (but not...

    Terry's Tips - A Cautionary Tale

The SEC filing says that Terry Allen has 1200 subscribers and that he charges $20 or more per month. Now I am thinking maybe this fellow has found the holy grail. Would you guys hate me if I quit slogging it out in the markets and simply offered a tip line instead?:p

IB - Monthly Legacy activity reports?

Sometime around late Spring, IB announced that the legacy statement format would be retired in September. I too liked that format better, but I guess it is gone. IB now has a flex statement feature, but it requires some serious programming to use. I plan to do that some day...

    Phantom quotes on ARCA

With IB it is called an "iceberg order". I believe the reserve size is held on IB's server, not at the ECN. Some ECNs have native hidden and subscriber-only orders. I think market makers also have additional capability for reserve orders.

    Passive Trend Methodology

That's a pretty good description of "trend following". The problem lies in the two decisions the trader needs to make: How do you recognize when a trend has started, and how do you recognize when the trend has ended. "The trend is your friend -- except for the bend at the end". Using a...

    Passive Trend Methodology

When you say only use price as a variable, how are you analyzing "only" price? That is where I am now in my latest project (intraday automated trading). I have been studying every trade without summarizing the data into bars -- just pure price. Actually, I don't have every trade because I am...

Can you tell us what time frame you use and number of trades (round turns) in a typical day? Thanks, [rwk]

    Passive Trend Methodology

I attended a presentation a while back in which the the trader showed copies of actual statements where he took a $75k account to just over $1mm in one year. He said the results would have been $4mm except that his wife kept bugging him to take some money off the table. He was trading US bond...

Why would anyone share their secrets?

This is actually one of the more insightful posts I have read on ET. There are good ideas here, but not many, and they tend to slip by the newbies unnoticed. Regarding trader skill, I do mostly automated trading these days. I suppose somebody could say the skill is building and testing the...

    New HD partitioning woes

I am a software, not hardware, techie so I am not sure of your problem. I bought a new Hitachi 160mb PATA drive to use in my 2001 vintage WinXP system. I couldn't get the drive to format and thought I would have to return it. Then I contacted Hitachi support and the gentleman graciously...

    shorting options

Naked options are considered dangerous because they offer limited profit potential for virtually unlimited risk. If you are able to predict direction, you can usually get a better profit/risk profile by trading bull or bear spreads.

The problem of education in TA

Thanks, Alex. Are you trading stocks, futures, or FX? I'm researching eMini index futures strategies. I use IB's tick stream which is sampled 10 times per second, or so I am told. I am analyzing every trade, so it is VERY short-term. [rwk]
