    Hedge Fund

Thanks - that gives me something to think about. I've got a certain amount of stats through (believe it or not) 6 actuarial exams on top of the IT experience. For some reason, I never really thought about breaking in with programming itself...

    Hedge Fund

Thx. That's what I thought someone was going to say, although I did not realize that the statistical side of things was so important.

    Hedge Fund

Two reasons I don't see myself working for a prop firm: 1. I've got a good IT job, so I don't want to quit what I do, plus I can't really watch a Level II screen all day of course. 2. I enjoy swing trading and so I wouldn't really get much bang-for-the-buck with all the connection fees that...

    Hedge Fund

Out of curiosity, say you consistently beat the indexes for several years in your own personal account. What are the chances you could be hired by a hedge fund based on your personal brokerage records? Would they ever hire someone simply based on pure performance? Or is that like trying to...

Beginning Swing Trader needs source of fundamental data for nightly screens

Oops - I didn't notice that it doesn't have RS which is your main interest.

Beginning Swing Trader needs source of fundamental data for nightly screens

I noticed that you're interested in low cost. Below is a great first-cut screener that is absolutely free. (It does what I want anyway.) http://www.siliconinvestor.com/stockscreen/advancedscreen.gsp Also: Amibroker is a very reasonable yet powerful way to get into scanning and...

    Attention all geeks!

I'd think these guys were geniuses except for one thing: they come up with a way to predict market crashes and then tell the whole world about it so every financial programmer on the globe is coding the same thing.

    Don't forget the IRA deductions-only 10 days

Thanks for the info. That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm swing trading quite conservatively in a Roth. I didn't know about the five year provision and will have to look into that should my fantasy actually materialize.

    Don't forget the IRA deductions-only 10 days

Thanks for the warning. But I would never even think about coming any where near close to draining my IRA. I agree with you entirely that it's a hedge and protection, but again thanks for the admonition. I've just had a long standing dream to retire early and be able to trade part or full time.

    Don't forget the IRA deductions-only 10 days

I'm an optimist and fully believe that I'm going to do a great job of trading over the next 10 years and steadily build up my IRA to several million dollars. (Please, let me live in my fantasy world.) So let's say that happens and that then I want early retirement. Can I take out, say...

    Ib

Oops! Keep in mind I live in the Land of the Politically Correct. There isn't a person in my entire state that gets Good Friday off. The thought never even crossed my mind!

    Ib

What's with IB? I use the net TWS and just get blank tickers. And when I called the Help Desk, it didn't send me into any kind of automated phone system - my call just "hung" after a "thanks for calling interactive brokers". Anybody else having technical difficulties?

    Unimaginable

I'm just saying that I will not go heavily long, because I think that there is a reasonable chance that terrorists will cripple our economy (only in the short term of course) in the next five years. I don't think that they will ever use a suitcase bomb, but I think that they will figure out a...

    Unimaginable

With all due respect, this IS a trading issue. I think one would be foolish to be heavily in certain kinds positions should someone contaminate a couple airports and financial centers with medical radioactivity and maybe even a spent fuel rod. This is n't the IRA. These "sand dune" people...

    Unimaginable

I have read that you can probably protect thyroid fairly well with potasium iodide for the short term, but you're right: what good does that do for you property?

    Unimaginable

I think that, for now, the threat of a suitcase bomb is negligible. But the threat of a dirty bomb is much more likely. I've read that a dirty bomb, where they spread low grade nuclear waste via conventional explosives, would leave the affected area contaminated for several months. Can't...

    Wade Cook Indicted

I thought some of you might be interested to know that Wade Cook has been indicted. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A49311-2002Feb21.html WASHINGTON –– Federal regulators want investing guru Wade Cook and his financial seminar service held in contempt for failing to...

    Fundamental Screening

I just got injured on a swing trade on a great stock with great ratios. I was convinced it could not go any lower and, of course, it did. Later I noticed that it's Price/Sales ratio was astronomical and so looking back on it, it must have been that the drop was due to the fact it was...

    ECN revolution

I prefer the ECN-type environment but wasn't rtharp's and don's point that the individual investor will not enjoy the bump on a block trade in an ECN environment whereas the NYSE specialist will generally include you in his large trade?

    Beating Buy and Hold

Good point! I'd never thought about a "survivorship bias". However, I would think that with just a few minimal QA screens you could weed out the tankers and perform just as well.
