Make a couple hundred, lose a couple thousand....

I really don't have the brains/discilpline/whatever for the greeks, the studying, etc. I go on gut feelings. I have a group of 15 stocks I watch, I listen to the news, I think about interest rates, momentum, historical prices, etc.. and I place my bets. It's fun, entertaining and...

Make a couple hundred, lose a couple thousand....

One thing i will say, I always remind myself, If I would have taken the other side........ Someday I'll find the nerve to go long options, instead of short. I think I'm starting to think it's a better way to go.

    S&P 500 Option Margin Requirements

    Thanks everyone for the posts. Even though my assumption was wrong, I still wanted to correct my math. It should be 1305 x .3, not 1350 x .3 . Duh. 1305 x .3 = 391.5 - 45 = 346.5 + 1.25 = 347.75 x 100 = $34,775 I know that is not the margin requirement, but I wanted to correct the math.

    S&P 500 Option Margin Requirements

I know about the common formula for equities; 30% x Underlying - OTM amount + 100% of option premium = Margin Requirement; for naked options..... Would it be the same for index options? So, for discussion's sake; S&P 500 = 1305 May S&P 500 1350 Call option = 1.25 So, 1350 x .3...

I screwed up, I'm still learning.

Well, I was reluctant to post what I did after the fact, because even I am perfect when it comes to hindsight, saying, "well, you should have done this and this...." after knowing what the earnings were. You know the old saying, "Just give me next year's Wall Street Journal, and I'll know...

I screwed up, I'm still learning.

Well, I'm not alright, I had my head handed to me. Clobbered. A major hit. :( Gee, can you guess the stock? I'll give you a hint, it's all over the financial news since they announced. Another lesson in humility.:( I really need to study more, and take smaller steps, trying for base...

I screwed up, I'm still learning.

I thought when you sell an OTM put, and buy the next further OTM put, then sell an OTM call, and buy the next further OTM call, on the same stock with the same month expiration, that's an Iron Condor. And I thought when you sell an OTM call and an OTM put on the same stock with the same...

I screwed up, I'm still learning.

Thanks everyone for posting. Well, I had a Strangle on AAPL, short April 60 puts and April 75 calls. They announced after the closing bell, and I was a little nervous with the stock at about 66. I closed out the position with a small profit, but would have done better just letting it...

I screwed up, I'm still learning.

I have to remember to include earnings season into my decision to take a position. I have an April call vertical, and an April put vertical(iron condor?) on a stock, and I was thinking, why are these premiums so fat? Then last week I learned that they announce this week:eek:......duh, what a...

    I stumped Ameritrade....

Well, kinda. The first thing yer probably thinking is, "Why is he at Ameritrade?". I dunno....... Anyways, I entered the symbol, "SPX" for the S&P 500, and it says the symbol is invalid. So I put the dollar sign in front of it, "$SPX". Same stuff. I entered the symbols for other...

    Finally using verticals

Hi Donna, Thanks, and all the best to you. I've also appreciated your posts. I tell ya, it is quite an education being here. Sometimes very humbling. It's cool that others with so much more knowledge take the time to post, I get so much from them. Later, Arnie

    Finally using verticals

Thanks again to ChrisM, and others, for the suggestion for freeing up more capital to take other positions. At first glance, I thought, hey, I'm not getting as much profit, but I gotta say, the comfort factor, and my sleep at night are greatly improved. I like doing spreads on both sides of...
