What Do Hedge Funds Think of Technical Analysis?

That’s like saying if you’re a really good cook just cook for yourself… Sure, yes. But many styles of trading (like cooking) require an expensive tech stack, staff, and access, and aren’t net profitable below a certain aum threshold (call it ~100mm).

What Do Hedge Funds Think of Technical Analysis?

I’m talking about legit ones typically running 100MM+. Lots of dudes with 100k put together an llc and call themselves a hedge fund… Trend following & momentum strategies use technical data, yes. I’ve not said *all* technicals are garbage.

What Do Hedge Funds Think of Technical Analysis?

Price, volume, volatility, options data, interest rate data, fx rates, etc. Sure a pureplay momentum strategy only needs % chg on a periodic basis... but none of these people are using "technical analysis" in the retail sense (looking at charts, developing ideas on charts, etc.).

What Do Hedge Funds Think of Technical Analysis?

We all have our hobbies. I'm not saying one size fits all, just saying that hedge funds don't find technicals very useful.

What Do Hedge Funds Think of Technical Analysis?

How do you know it's an institution behind a trade? How do you know the direction?

What Do Hedge Funds Think of Technical Analysis?

It’s not predictive of flow lol. (1) Assets tend to move together — you can run a regression on every stock vs spx and in aggregate come up with ~0.7 r^2 (moves of spx explain moves of stock). Drivers of the stock market are expectations around earnings and interest rates. You can’t use macd...

Haha the nookie thing is just trader lingo for usd/krone. And you’d always say “dollar - nokkie”. Corporates choose banks for a variety of reasons. Bank offerings are relatively the same within each tier of bank (regionals, nationals, money center/int’l). Relationships are usually a big driver...

    Martin Armstrong.....

He’s a joke. He raised a fund claiming to use advanced quantities analysis which ended up just being stochastics and golden mean garbage. He speculated with investor capital and lost it because his analysis doesn’t work and he was sued for misrepresenting his approach.

What Do Hedge Funds Think of Technical Analysis?

I am actively trading every day and use fundamental equity research. Among my peer group of traders, analysts, and portfolio managers, technicals are not seen as a serious or useful tool. It’s kind of funny that you guys think hedge funders are just drawing lines and staring at charts. You...

    Need Pair Selection Methodology

Yeah you’ll typically have at least 3 broker relationships (sometimes this is mandated by board of directors), though a primary bank with whoever hands your corp bank accounting needs (called treasury services).

What Do Hedge Funds Think of Technical Analysis?

That’s fair, but what you’re not getting is that the basis for technical analysis — that it is predictive of future flow or price — is wrong, unless you believe other retail traders like you drive a stocks price through a day, overtime, etc. In real life, retail day traders make up a fraction of...

What Do Hedge Funds Think of Technical Analysis?

Only one of the guys is legit, and yeah sure at the end of the day if you can make money good for you. Vast majority of hedge funds do not use technical analysis in a meaningful way like retail (e.g. trade ideas, price targets, etc.). While certain technicals are valuable (skew, positioning...

    Need Pair Selection Methodology

Yes you only trade with people that have accounts with you. Bank trader has to consider their existing reserves, how much they can get in interdealer and swap markets, where they can source liquidity from etc. they may need to temporarily be short the underlying currency, etc. Note: in real...

    Need Pair Selection Methodology

literally yes, except that the corp is asking for quotes from 3-5 firms so you have 20 seconds to get back to them. Yes, e.g. “we just saw an order to buy 50k options on dollar-nokkie” to a trader (either at the corp treasury team or buy side trader) who is interested in the name. Why are...

Cover means that they facilitate the buying and selling of those currencies, and will also provide market color. I should note that banks and most pros aren’t making markets in spot… for cash markets, almost everything is electronic so just post bid/ask or trade via screens. However, most...

    Need Pair Selection Methodology

Pros are assigned by coverage. For example an FX desk at a bank is structured to cover g10, em, and exotics. Within g10 you may have 1-3 traders covering 2-6 pairs within coverage, with one in London, NYC, and Tokyo/HK/Singapore. This is because banks use a “follow the sun” strategy to provide...
