Protectionism will solve US economic mess?

I think you are the one who needs to take the blinders off. The US benefits from trade more than most other major countries. Why do you think we have this lifestyle. If a country wants to screw their consumer to protect an industry, that's fine. I would never encourage ours to do the same...

Protectionism will solve US economic mess?

Are you blind to certain periods of history. High tariffs sent us into the Great Depression in the 30's. You also seem completely naive to international economics. Reciprocal tariffs don't work well. Countries don't necessarily place flat rate tariffs on all goods from a particular nation...

OP, You're asking a question based on opinion. The answer depends on your risk tolerance, timeline, and access to the markets.

Protectionism will solve US economic mess?

good in many respects but it won't work well. We have a very low ratio of exports to GDP. Most american goods are consumed in North America. Best solution is to simply not use tarriffs, quotas and boycots as political tools. Using economic tools for political agendas always hurts the...

What is your 401K performance YTD?

I gotcha. I move mine around about once a month. Up 20% for the year. Shifted from all domestic to global in april.

Protectionism will solve US economic mess?

As I understood the article, it isn't making the move only to solve econ problems. It was a move to be the first to force higher standards on chinese products. Personally I think it is the appropriate thing to do. If you don't like the quality of goods, then don't buy them. They didn't put...

What is your 401K performance YTD?

Actively managing a 401K is generally something more like 1 trade a month. 2 trades per week in a 401K is pretty crazy. It's not the intent of the account. My 401K brokerage certainly isn't setup for trading twice a week. I don't have that much control over trade execution.

    Gamma

Forex is right, but I would add that the person you heard was probably talking about selling far OTM credit verticals or something similar. Occassionally you'll find someone referring to selling far OTM single strikes though. Anyway, selling cheap gamma usually means opening a credit...

Market down 1.75%, VIX only up 2.02% ?? huh?

VIX was simply reflecting the holiday time decay. The floor is pricing in time decay until next Monday's open. This results in VIX dropping.

    Vista or XP?

Yep, for trading XP Pro is the best windows platform. Especially on a laptop Vista sucks.

    Synthetics Question?

AAPL EXAMPLE 165/170 bear call vertical Credit received = $250 Buying Power used = $250 Max Profit = $250 Collar (synthetic equivalent) Buying power used ~ $8,200 Max Profit = $250 Would you rather tie up $250 to make $250, or would you rather tie up $8,200 to make the same...

    Synthetics Question?

Same reason one would sell a naked put instead of constructing a covered call using the underlying stock. The vertical is much less capital intensive for the same reward. The capital left free can be used elsewhere to generate additional returns. I'd only advocate use of the collar if...

Who's the best Fed Chairman of all time?

That's what I'm getting from it too. A decision that had to be made. The other option was a complete collapse of the US monetary system.

    Managing Funds for a Living

I would be happy to post my trading, but our styles are so completely different that nobody would really benefit. What you are targeting as yearly gains, I am targeting as weekly gains. Your intended growth for the month is my intended growth for the earlier part of one day. My trading is...

Who's the best Fed Chairman of all time?

It's true that A. Burns was the FED chair pushing for discontinuation of gold convertibility, but Volcker was head of the President's committee on monetary policy, specifically called the Volcker Group. It is the President who gets credit for the economic policy that discontinued gold...

Who's the best Fed Chairman of all time?

A group was formed called the "Volcker Group" under Nixon. One of the first directives of the Nixon administration was the establishment of a permanent working group chaired by Under Secretary of the Treasury for Monetary Affairs Paul Volcker to make recommendations on international monetary...

Who's the best Fed Chairman of all time?

That wasn't true of Greenspan before the Tech bubble. He had a fundamental change in perspective during the tech bubble when he decided that the FED should get involved in the market. Before that he didn't see Wall Street as being anything more than a very minor factor in FED decision making.

    Options Daytrading?

Yes but you need to be fair. The return on the underlying trade also didn't consider costs. If I include Interactive Brokers costs on both the futures and options scenarios above, the results are as follows. NQ roundtrip costs (comm + slippage) ~ $55 ROI = 2.65% NDX Calls roundtrip...

Unfortunately it is included in the user agreement on ET. :D Fortunately it is kept to a minimum at certain other (obese-tail) forums.
