    Payout Structure Questions at Interview

OK, I gotta ask this question. How does Heartland retain GOOD traders? I mean if a trader really learned to trade and was making good money for the firm, why wouldn't he go to another firm that gives the trader 100%? What would the advantage be to staying at Heartland?

what got you into trading ??

I worked at a place where most of the guys I worked with were into the market. I kinda got the fever. One day Sybase got nailed on news. I had worked with the software, knew it was in wide use and felt it was worth a buy. So I ran down to the local Schwab office, opened an account and...

    NYSE Order Routing Tutorial

For those that want all the ugly details, you can get them here: http://www.nyse.com/pdfs/im01-4Microsoft%20Word%20-%20Document%20in%2001-4.pdf This looks interesting to me: "Rule 123A.40. The specialist will not be required to fill any stop orders elected by an auto ex execution at the...

Why Do Most Traders Lose MOney?

All the items listed in the poll contribute, but after working with a great number of traders, I can see that it almost always comes down to lack of discipline. If I could vote for one of the above for everytime I've lost money or I've seen another trader lose money, the lack of discipline...

    Jacob Internet Fund -95% YTD

My guess is no more than about 5% of what he used to have:D That one of the left looks like a double black diamond run, but I'd prefer skiing it than investing in it.:p

    Exits-- targets vs. trailing stops

Both have merit. Targets can be particularly beneficial if you use them around price support/resistance points. There was an interesting article in either TASC or Active Trader about using Volatility based trailing stops and it said that these could give you more of an edge than regular...

    Prem, Tick, Trin, Vix, Etc.

That is possible. What quote software do you use?

    Prem, Tick, Trin, Vix, Etc.

And now look, we've been going down steadily all afternoon, but never hit more than -900 on the TICK, so the basic idea has merit.

    Prem, Tick, Trin, Vix, Etc.

I don't trade the QQQ, so I can't answer about that. However the NYSE tick (I think that's what you're calling the DOW tick, but it tracks more than the DOW), is the one that the traders I know use. But, it may be different for the QQQ or NASDAQ stocks.

    Prem, Tick, Trin, Vix, Etc.

Well, there's never truly a "never" in trading. And this is one of them. There are times when the TICK can go to extremes and that MAY indicate a reversal is coming. This usually occurs when the tick is + or - 1000. And today was a CLASSIC example. That extreme was hit and BOING, you get...

    Excel Macro?

Check out the Timer function in VBA. You can set it up at any interval you specify and then when it occurs, it calls the macro you specify and in there you can populate the cells you want.

There's an old saying "You can't be your own man without your own money". Maybe this is one of those instances they refer to.

    Trader Taxation / CPA Experiences

I definitely agree with this. There are many firms that will charge you "research fees" on things they should already now (isn't that why you are paying them?) This includes local firms as well as web firms. My wife's a tax accountant (not CPA) and a few years ago worked for a firm that was...

Holy Cr*p ISLD blocked from providing QQQ ,DIA, and SPY full book quotes

So if it's a "4 out of the last 6 months" thing, does that mean that ISLD will have it again in about 3 months because they're losing all that volume? And then will INCA and REDI cycle along as well? This is really screwy.

56k connection and real-time data feed.

It depends on your trading style and trading software. For RediPlus, you could have 3 montage windows going with a 56K connection and be fine. But if you're trading many stocks and need more montage windows, then you'll have a problem. For some packages, you need Cable or DSL, regardless...
