exactly the point. so long as it's America's standard, Americans seem to have little problem with it, which makes perfect sense. the problem is what if China (or Pakistan, or Russia, or whichever country with substantial military/nuclear power) decides that its standards should apply...

Ideally, sure. but practically, this would mean overthrowing (?) and policing how much of the world? first the entire middle east, then N. Korea, then China, then Cuba, then... arugably a majority of the non-G8 world.
