    Anti-War Protestors -- A Serious Discussion

I'm sure you're right, there have been cases going both ways, and that the interpretation has expanded and contracted over time. and there have been many instances whrere speech has been correctly limited - classified documents, slander, obscenity, the famous "fire in crowded theater" example...

    Anti-War Protestors -- A Serious Discussion

I agree - restraint would be wiser, and protesting with the sole goal of harming American servicemen is deplorable. but that's up to the individual - there's little the state could do in this regard aside from prohibiting speech, which is a greater danger in the long term. as to the...

    Anti-War Protestors -- A Serious Discussion

not sure the question makes sense - are you arguing that abrogating the First Amendment would dishearten the enemy, or at least not embolden it, and therefore save American lives? or were you extending to some extreme hypothetical, where one had to choose between a right to free speech and...

Who do you want to win the war?

this is a good point, and the goal of it makes sense. but one might wonder, given the half a trillion dollars they're willing to spend on this operation, and that domination and abuse apparently spurs the terrorism in the first place, whether there is a wiser way to go about establishing that...

    PC Quagmire

extremely tough situation for the military. don't envy them one bit, having their hands tied, trying to help people that don't want to be helped, not knowing who the enemy is, blended in with the civilians. the pundits haven't given up on their claims that the Iraqis will suddenly have a...

    Anti-War Protestors -- A Serious Discussion

some of these people have deviated from the purpose of the rallies, and many of them seem to be doing it for the attention or the thrill of breaking the law. but the alternative - preventing the rallies - would be far worse than any damage they could possibly cause.

Where the HELL is that fat bastard Cheney??

this thread went a bit OT... lol taxation rates are set at the highest possible level without incurring a revolt from the taxed. services and government jobs are then set according to how much money is available, either through tax receipts or by debt (again, the maximum allowable). all...

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE OIL (isn't it?)

Who do you want to win the war?

exactly the point. so long as it's America's standard, Americans seem to have little problem with it, which makes perfect sense. the problem is what if China (or Pakistan, or Russia, or whichever country with substantial military/nuclear power) decides that its standards should apply...

Who do you want to win the war?

Ideally, sure. but practically, this would mean overthrowing (?) and policing how much of the world? first the entire middle east, then N. Korea, then China, then Cuba, then... arugably a majority of the non-G8 world.
