What happened just now 1pm EST?

Dude, you have to try to think about these things for yourself. What does a failed auction mean? What does a govt's inability to fund its various fiscal measures mean?

    Question about Fed buys treasury?

Good luck! You and the entire primary dealer community is lining up for a handout from the Fed. I think the dealers are quite a bit ahead of you in the queue, though.

    UK: Uncovered gilt auction

Hahahaha, this really has to be the biggest joke of all. The BoE buyback goes 35 cents through the mkt. Some gilt mkt-makers just pocketed a big chunk of UK taxpayer money.

BTW, gilt is back to unchanged from having sold off a lot.

    UK: Uncovered gilt auction

You can go to the DMO's website to read about the details of the auction process: www.dmo.gov.uk The auction was bad, but not that bad, so I wouldn't read too much into it. The 40y point is a weird one and sort of falls between the natural demand areas. However, one thing that it...

    Sinking Fund Concept

Not gonna work... Only thing of a similar nature I have seen in practice is NAV trigger, but that's extremely dangerous and doesn't really provide any sort of guarantee. In general, as an investor, I'd be extremely skeptical of everything that has 'principal-protected' on it. In my...

    Interesting: Krugman gets into fisticuffs...

Yes, this is one of the common critiques of the 'paradox of thrift' and it does make sense. However, stop bashing Keynes, pls, folks. He was a genius (just like Marx) for his time and he advanced our understanding of economics a lot, even with the things that subsequently were demonstrated...

Get a loan at 4% to invest long term in the Dow Jones?

Actually, it might not be such a bad idea, what with the printing press running at capacity. If it keeps going, Dow in nominal terms might just go to the moon and nothing beats being a borrower when inflation's high.
