Those who poo pah the general idea are incorrect. Billions have been made by funds going down this path. Medallion fund, one of the best, from Renaissance Technologies, has been automated for decades and they have been heavy into machine learning for many years.

Obviously manual is not better, if you know what you are doing. However, I believe you are not able to successfully automate. Medallion fund has made many, many billions fully automated * few are skilled enough to win manually and few have the skills to successfully automate.
