    soybeans sept 23

The CBOT on their website lists a recap of the market action but it is very simple and doesn't keep much track of the option trades. When I worked for brokers in the grain options one duty was to keep a players card each day of major activity. Example Cargill sold 1400 SX 1500 calls. We'd...

    soybeans sept 23

I think we'll see corn to the 600-650 range within the end of october and beans around $14. I don't think there is any justification currently for a rally beyond that. I'm worried about a sell off in the dollar as bullish for commodities so I agree on a bull move over the next couple of...

How good your market neutral credit spread strategy ?

I imagine most of my success has come from avoiding these events. I think the calendar spreading helps to some degree but there is always added risks of delta decrease in the front month and very bad timing for an unprecedented event. The only other alternative I see to protect on this is...

How good your market neutral credit spread strategy ?

Over the last year I've become a premium seller of ag and soft options. I've only been doing this strategy for 18 months or so. I aim to make 5% a month and diversify that option selling by shorting off setting puts and calls in highly correlated markets. I calendar spread to help...

Something to laugh at after a tough week

Thought many of you might get a laugh at this. I'm not too clear how long it's been around but it is pretty funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVB-SSkkLnY enjoy

I really hate say it, but I think there will be suicides over this

As an option seller that sticks primarily to grains and softs things are okay. I primarily sell calendar strangles and deep otm ratio spreads. Picked up some good premium on deep out of the money gold calls today with the run up. I hope for a correction by the end of the week. If not i'm...

    Managing risk in futures

Most of us who have been in the business for a while have "paid" for the education. I agree with some of the comments on the risks of option trading but when used correctly they are an effective way to manage risk which is the nature of your post. I second RT trader on spread trading...

    Managing risk in futures

For some good books on options I'd check out Sheldon Natenberg's "Option Pricing and Volatility". Another great book about some alternative option strategies is "The complete guide to selling options" by James Cordier. All the best.

Thanks for all the comments. To defend "Huck Finn" it does have some great life lessons about courage and tolerance. Worth a read even if it has no practical job skills imbedded in it unless you want to captain a raft.

    Managing risk in futures

I'd also like to point out if your thinking about risk management at this point you are ahead of the game of most initial traders. Congrats on that!

    Managing risk in futures

Which such little initial capital I'd advise you to use options to do your trading with. If you buy an option you know your risk immediately. $400 is 8 cents on a grain option. Granted your upside is dependent on the delta of the option but at least you can make some money on the swings...

Help a High School with a Trading Project

Good point. I think it just shows everyone has a passion for something. For me trading is a way to supplement my income. In addition I love the challenge of trading. I also take joy from helping my friends and family members meet their financial goals. Any job or endeavor without passion...

I second that. I've had a teaching candidate come to the interview with her mother. Needless to say she is not in our employ. Teaching students to self-advocate and be responsible is always a challenging tasks.

Help a High School with a Trading Project

I see your point. I left the floor to go into education because i felt called to do something else. I realize with trading as a profession that in the end it is about money. We do make a point to stress in the unit that we have an obligation to contribute to the common good and using wealth...

Help a High School with a Trading Project

We had one student last year sit for the exam over the summer and passed. He landed a summer job at a local brokerage firm and is now majoring in ag econ at U of I. To be fair he learned most of what he needed by studying on his own but the class did help spark his interest in the industry.

Help a High School with a Trading Project

Seeing as these are seniors in high school it is pretty much a given they already know how to read and write. Our average ACT score is 6 pts above the national average and this is a unit in a class dedicated to "economics." Our students also complete 100 hours of service to the community to...
