    Wash sales

One way to avoid the wash sale problem is to set up an entity and elects IRS 'Trader in Securities' status. To qualify, your entity needs to do a relatively large volume of trades on a yearly basis. Under this rule you can enjoy the benefits of Mark to Market accounting and completely do away...

Is investing in real estate less time-consuming than stocks?

I almost pulled the trigger on buying some income properties last year but backed out. I felt it was too much work for a 10% return on investment. I can do better than that in my stock investing for sure. The investment properties in my area are usually old and decrepit with deferred...

Tudor reorganizing, PTJ taking a hands-on role

I'd be happy if this proves to be a correct assessment: 'Jones, who has been frustrated with the macro trading environment, said things are "on the verge of a significant change" and that the current market is reminiscent of the bubble of 1999.'

    Opinions on Interactive Brokers?

If you're trading with breadth (large number of small positions in stocks) then IB is good with their commission structure. But if you are doing concentrated large bets (eg. your whole account value into one stock at a time) then your commission will be significantly higher than 'commission per...

    Peterffy's worst trade ever?

It's looking like the house and senate versions of the tax reform bill are in pretty close agreement and chances of passing in its present form are quite high. This will be painful for homes in high value/high tax communities where relatively average families pay $25k to $40k in yearly property...

don't worry about him I think he'll be just fine - it's about a tenth of a percent of his net worth.

Opinion: The tax bill deserves to die

I've been looking at property taxes in a number of places such as Boca Raton and Tampa area - they are lower on a absolute basis and on a percent-of-home-value basis compared to NY. I believe FL and TX rely more on sales tax and other consumption based taxes.

Opinion: The tax bill deserves to die

Last I checked the state of Florida (which might be my eventual destination) manages to provide police, infrastructure, fire fighters, roads, infrastructure and education. All without levying a single cent in income taxes. Imagine that!

Opinion: The tax bill deserves to die

I too run a location independent company and I live in NY. Some years I have fallen in the 8.82% NY tax bracket and it has been extremely painful to write such huge checks to a state that will throw it away on non capital expenditures. I don't know about CA but NY has a vast population of...

Opinion: The tax bill deserves to die

Wake up - we're in the 21st century. The new paradigm of a flattening world and location independence is unstoppable.

Opinion: The tax bill deserves to die

If this bill goes through in its current form the Tax-and-Spend Democrat states will be hit hard. State income tax will no longer be allowed to be used as a deduction against income for Federal tax calculation. Any relocatable business or businessperson would be foolish not to leave for greener...

Is it possible to make consistent profits from trading

It can be profitable. Currently I am able to generate about 80% positive months (about 10 out of every 12 months will be profitable). It's difficult to tell you what my positions are as there are several (close to 20 at this time) unrelated models each doing their own thing. And I think this is...

Guggenheim ‘bank wrecker’ could get $100M exit package

This woman did raise $290 Billion for the firm - I believe she is quite deserving of the exit package. Compare that to Marissa Mayer who got almost double that in her severance from Yahoo, after having driven it into the ground.

Quant Hedge Fund Acrospire Shuts Down After Clients Pull Money

I just meant to say that in a prior decade I had worked with some of the guys involved with this firm and it sucks to see so many strategies keeling over.

New York-area hedge fund manager charged with Ponzi fraud

My friend was invested with a firm about 9 years ago - it turned out to be a ponzi scheme. To me it seemed too good to be true so I stayed the hell away. It out there guys, be careful. These days with the low yields there are a lot scams popping up in the world of 'hard money' funds, note funds...

How simple are professional trader's strategies?

I think that every strategy, whether a basic trader or a professional, uses very simple inputs to generate a buy/sell decision for any asset - call this a basic relationship. The inputs may consist of price momentum or reversion indicators or other factors besides price history. What sets the...

    Excel DDE Add-In

Already tried all that and a lot of other stuff. Believe me nothing works for me. Maybe my hardware is weird and does not play nice with Windows 10 (alienware). You're right in that it's not an addin in the typical sense. RTD uses a specific DLL that's supposed to preload at Excel launch (sortof...
