    Steel Stocks

So AKS is up 3.7% off their own earnings while NUE is up 11.75%!? Perhaps that's it but I doubt it.

    Averaging down is addictive

"Lets differentiate between 2 different things here 1- Averaging down on a loser (only done coz one refuses to take a loss and hoping for a come back) 2- Building up a huge position (planned and intended)" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------...

    Averaging down is addictive

agreed with Leon. Adding to a losing position going against can be very effective provided it is within the construct of an overall strategy or style, not just as a spur of the moment "oh sh*t, I'm down a point, better double down.". As for a stoploss, mine is the closing bell..it seems to...

Why more stock daytraders than futures?

"Right. The simple short answer: Always think about who your opponents are. " I always thought my biggest enemy was myself. And since I'm pretty sure I'm a dumbass, how come I'm down so much this week? Point taken about the talent involved in various mkts, but just cause she's the hottest...

Why more stock daytraders than futures?

I think there are quite a few futures traders on this site, it's just that most of them aren't professional/full time traders, so while they voice their opinion often, they aren't going to post numbers like many of the equity traders, giving the illusion there are more equity guys. I think...

    UC Berkeley Senior Needs Guidance

from a Cal grad that's worked in finance for the last decade in the Bay Area, there are quite a few hedge funds in the area, try to get involved with one..particularly one which will sponsor you for the cfa. Don't worry about salary or your job description. Like another poster said, trading...

Why the need to post PnL, real-time calls, etc?

I would imagine guys post their numbers for the same reason lots of people participate in various forums..in hopes that other like minded people will comment or add to the discussion which may create a constructive dialogue beneficial to both parties. I happen to think most numbers posted on...

    Who (whom) leads Whom (who)???

It's highly circumstantial, but I'd say in general the Nikkei and the European mkts follow the US mkts. (so when if the SPX closes up 15 pts tomorrow you would expect thurs morning to see the foreign mkts strong) Of course any fundamental data occuring overnight will hit the Nikkei first, then...

    tough trading week of 09/11/06

decent week here but still seemed pretty treacherous (took a couple huge hits on some financials earlier this week, guess which ones.) seems like this is usually the case on volatility, low volume weeks. Low volume at least relative to the action we got the energies/metals/financials.

    Any VLO traders here?

crack spread is the spread between gasoline and oil. since VLO is a refiner it benefits when the spread is wider, as opposed to an integrated, which has exposure to both crude and gasoline.

    Some food for thought: Eckhardt

can't speak for systems. All the traders I know, including myself, are disgressionary. Though I do believe at the center of any disgressionary trader is a crude system, whether we believe it or not. And I'd imagine exits could be random as well, only then the entries would have to be well...

    Some food for thought: Eckhardt

they've had this perma bull mindset for the last three years. and while their pnl was highly correlated to the overall direction of the month (so for instance this Jan was great..May not so great) they rarely had a losing month. I haven't done the research but I'd be willing to bet that each...

    Some food for thought: Eckhardt

don't know if this fit's in the discussion of entry vs exit but I've worked with some serious perma bulls in the past. These guys are convinced US equity mkts only go up and trade accordingly. I'd say 95% of all opens they were long a basket of Naz, NYSE stocks along with the indices. If the...

    Desperation

as far as the risk discussion is concerned, after 6 years trading full time I'd have to side in the risk is good camp. Most of succesful guys I know (disgressionary here, not system based) take on large levels of risk pretty regularly. Key is they never lose their heads in extreme situations. I...

    recording dynamic data in excel

So I have a dde link where I pull quote data onto a spreadsheet, and I'm trying to see if there is a way to chart that data, but not sure if there is a way to record the 'ticking' data in excel. I did an excel search, and didn't see anything pertinent. (at least from what I could tell) Is...

Any traders in the Bay Area

I work in an office in Berkeley. One of our traders recently moved out leaving a seat to fill. If anyone in the area is looking for an office to trade in let me know, the office is in a great location and the environment is a positive one. For what it's worth we're all primarily equity traders.

    Trading houses?

well he's got me sold, I'm calling right now! Yah I've seen a million of those, course I've seen a million shady trading infomercials and I know it's possible to make a decent living prop trading, so I dunno.

    Trading houses?

So a friend of mine just came into a bit of $$$ and wants to get into the business of buying distressed properties, remodeling them, and then selling them 3-6 mo's later. My opinion is that the real estate market is at best stalled, worst could see a appreciable dip (we live in CA-Bay Area)...
