    So a Bloomberg Terminal is $1,500 per month. Why?

    They didn't even offer me the monitor setup... I think it's available for an extra $50-$150/mo, if I recall correctly. They sent me the keyboard but its sitting in the corner gathering dust.

    Brent options

    Hi all, I'm really interested in trading Brent volatility (versus CL). But from what I can tell, brent options trade relatively lightly... and the spread is a fat 0.30 on the options. By comparison, NYMEX CL options trade with a 2-4 cent spread. Any thoughts on how I can make this work...

    My account value reaches $600,000 for the first time; launching incubator hedge fund

    Yes, that was my first thought as well. If they need 7x leverage just to attract investors + generate interesting returns... then they should get out of the game. And for that matter, I have no problems getting 7x leverage from much smaller institutional brokers with just a few million in...

    what should I do having a good track record?

    10 month track record is way, way too short. Waiting for 3 years is not an arbitrary requirement. It's a basic threshold, IMO, for separating the lucky from the good. I'm much more likely to invest in a fund returning 10% a year for the last 10 years, than on your 10-month record.

    Sunday evening: Libyan *army* announces cease-fire

    I don't know about the internal politics here... but speaking as an interested outsider, it's interesting that the (discredited) ceasefire announced Friday came from the foreign ministry. Today's announcement comes courtesy of the military directly, but Qaddafi isn't personally named. Perhaps...

    HowardCohodas Index Options Credit Spread Trading Journal

    The bottom line is, if you're (net) short volatility, your distribution will always be skewed. There's nothing you can do to change that fact. Your maximum gains are limited by your initial position, but your maximum losses aren't. So, draw-downs are just a part of life for this strategy...

    Keeping My Day Job – Trading 20k to 2 Million in 20 Years, One Month at a Time

    I'm sorry, is this comment a joke? I don't get the punchline.

    Why the f did I have to mention the Kobe earthquake...

    It's that time of year again.

    I don't understand why they keep talking about the formula "taking the risk" out of the markets... as if it's guaranteed profits. That's really not the case. That's not to say its not significant... but it just more efficiently allowed us to trade *risk* itself. It by no means didn't get...

    Smart Money Sells Straddles!

    Common misconception on Nick Leeson. He himself says the naked straddle position isn't that significant; at most, it was the proverbial straw that broke the banks back. I recall his straddle trade was something like +$200 mil that fall, and th Kobe earthquake turned that into a -$200 mil...

    CME Colocation

    It's a darn good business model. By being the clearinghouse instead of just one of many exchanges... CME has almost infinite potential for monetizing their dominance in these markets. No wonder Nasdaq was hoping to be acquired by one of the mercantile exchanges.

    Top colleges make little difference to future income

    If you read the actual study (linked in the above article)... their primary result is that *if* you control for the students' high school GPA and SAT, then going to an elite college added nothing (statistically speaking). In other words, if you had a 4.0 GPA in high school, and scored a 1500...

    Flash Crash Update

    I wonder about unintended consequences. If I'm a HFT mm, what motivates me to keep my book open as the VPIN climbs? You say I'm hedged and won't take losses; true, but if I turn off my box, I gain on the VPIN future side! Why settle for a hedge when I have gains?

    Kids = worthless investment?

    How about those asshole parents who beat their kids to death for wetting the bed... Humans are just filled with flaws.

    Crazy skew in crude..

    With Apr futures trading at 103.80.... 104 puts are trading at about the same level as a 106 call. Now that's skew.

    Kids = worthless investment?

    I don't see a philosophical contradiction here. Many would postulate exactly what you said: the point of life is to sustain life. Single cell organisms have no purpose in life, except to create more single cell organisms. Must humans be different? But I wasn't really making the...

    Kids = worthless investment?

    The research is interesting, but the conclusion doesn't follow in my mind. I for one have a hard time imagining the point of life, if it wasn't for my kids. I have a great wife, I have a great career.... But so what? What's the purpose behind work...? Buy more crap? Are we on this earth...

    My account value reaches $600,000 for the first time; launching incubator hedge fund

    I'm not sure where this information is coming from. I'm not saying its wrong, but just that it doesn't match what I've seen. From my limited experience so far, the only requirement for "audited" numbers is coming courtesy of the NFA. As a registered (non-exempt) commodity pool, I have an...

    Crude at 106

    Keep an eye on the big picture, here. Say that they actually tap the reserve in an attempt to keep crude around $100, for example. Say they succeed for the next 6 months... and the economy manages to grow another 1.5-2% over that time period. What happens if, 6 months from now, something...
