Thanks for the info, Steven. Very interesting and food for thought!

    Can IRS force Trader Status?

Many people do choose their state based on taxation. For example, a lot of people live here rather than NYC because of lower state income tax, no local tax, lower sales tax, no taxes on clothing, lower fuel tax, as well as getting more land for your money. But they have raised the sales tax in...

    Can IRS force Trader Status?

New Jersey. There probably aren't many that do it that way, but there are some, and New Jersey is one of them. It really stinks to have a large net capital loss for the year in New Jersey!

    Option trader tax status

So true. In my case, the vast majority of my trading is writing options. In viewing both checklists below... Green's checklist: Substantial volume Substantial proceeds Regular Frequent Continuous Time Daily market movements Intention Business setup Materiality On Green's checklist, I cannot...

    Can IRS force Trader Status?

You got it, Zzzz1. If you have net losses for the year, in some states, like mine, no matter how large the loss, you put "0" on the "capital gains" line with no carryover. A net loss for the year gets you no benefit / no relief. That changes with TTS, and becomes a huge benefit for those with a...

    Option trader tax status

Exactly, Fonz. For a trader like myself who trades mostly options all day, every day, that last part complicates matters for me in what otherwise would be a clear-cut TTS for me. The dollar amount isn't there per transaction. So while I definitely consider what I do to be a business, that is...

    Can IRS force Trader Status?

I am considering TTS as well, since I can't see how I wouldn't qualify. I trade full-time, open to close, and do thousands of trades per year. It's all I do for income. When I researched it last, the biggest advantage I saw was for those like myself who live in a state that will tax capital...

Historic streak of 109 days comes to an end. What now, DOW?

I agree, birzos, that we will reach back into record territory in April. Seasonality and the earnings push will get us there. comagnum, thanks for the post! I saw a version of that chart that conveniently omitted the "3-months after close" portion. It made it appear that any way you looked at...

Historic streak of 109 days comes to an end. What now, DOW?

And what a streak it was! Longest streak of not having a 1% down day in nearly 1/4 century, and just the second in nearly half a century. For us longs, the cup runneth over. The last time we experienced a down day like this was Oct. 12. We were all over it in my thread of Oct. 11, here...

BREAKING NEWS: First the triangle broke, now the support broke

3-month S&P chart. Hope you are able to find one someplace. BTW, this is all old news now and insignificant. It's only useful now if you like to see missed opportunities, because that will clearly still show. Have a great day...

BREAKING NEWS: First the triangle broke, now the support broke

This version was well-known and obvious. Sorry I don't have time to waste for those uninformed. Also sorry for those who can't pull up a simple 3-month S&P chart. That's all it takes. Clear as day.

BREAKING NEWS: First the triangle broke, now the support broke

Laziness of the founder, or out-of-touch, likely both. And you need to find something better to do than waste a post here.

BREAKING NEWS: First the triangle broke, now the support broke

Thanks for the input. Everyone charts differently and interprets what they see differently. I saw this version of triangle clearly developing the second half of September. I started searching the net for articles written by those who saw the same thing. There were a few blogs, but none of the...

BREAKING NEWS: First the triangle broke, now the support broke

That was indeed BREAKING NEWS. Others on here got it. The most recent "market top" happened mid-August. That's very old news. Why wouldn't a long with cash to put to work NOT be interested in this thread? Or not be interested in a correction? While some traders like to jump on the momentum...

BREAKING NEWS: First the triangle broke, now the support broke

I agree. DOW didn't want to stay below 18000 for too long. It was the longest time it spent below since the post-Brexit breakout, though. Tomorrow will be interesting!

BREAKING NEWS: First the triangle broke, now the support broke

Maverick... a) I'm implying that the market could be in correction mode. b) If you've been paying attention, there was to be a sharp break at the end of the triangle. The sharp break has confirmed to be down now that the triangle has ended. c) If shorting the market is what my trading thesis...

BREAKING NEWS: First the triangle broke, now the support broke

Very good point, Gary. Probably why most suggested the sharp break would be down. In terms of higher lows, you can even see that in today's daily chart...higher lows all day since the 10AM bottom. There was even 2 retests of the DOW 17960 level. We're back to the top of the 5-day downward...

BREAKING NEWS: First the triangle broke, now the support broke

As you continue to contribute absolutely nothing, I began by saying I raised cash the past 3 months. I sold all my bear ETFs at nice profits today and raised more cash. Now I'm ready to put said cash to work. There is no trading rule that says I should remain short the market because support...

Just another ET troll. What has this site come too? I said I SOLD my bear ETFs. Covered = buy. Go back to Trading 101 and get out of here.
