Should IB program a non-Java TWS?

Got mail tonight from Schwab saying that an application substantially like their StreetSmartPro platform (which is a simplified, slightly older version of Cybertrader) will soon be available within a web brower. It sort of looks like the SchwabTraderCT application they had a few years ago...

Should IB program a non-Java TWS?

Usually one has to go to the Yahoo message boards to see this sort of sweeping generalization. I assume you've talked to a statistically significant number of TWS users to arrive at this "truth"?

Any Real time streaming quotes DEMO?

This may qualify as a source of almost-free quotes: open an IRA account at a broker who doesn't charge periodic fees, put $2000 into something safe like a money-market fund, and use the account as a source of real-time quotes.

    IB driving me crazy!

Are we talking about TWS? It's just a GUI client that talks to a server. No interfacing with a DBMS. Java is great for things like TWS because all the graphical libraries have been written for you, it works on multiple platforms without source code changes, and it has much better error...

    DELL just warned:

I'm surprised at how much this is hitting the S&P 500. The change in SPY from 16:06:59 to now is -3.15%, but QQQQ's only down 4.12%. I'd expect the techs to be down a lot more than the broader market. Maybe MSFT (down 5%) is dragging down the S&P. DELL is down 5.37%.

    idiotic question about options MM

Wait, you mean they'll display a size of 10 but if you place a buy order at the ask, for 10, they'll only give you a fill of 1?

    Questions about eTrade

The commission is based on the previous quarter's activity, as far as I know. But they're constantly changing the rules and rates, so once you're a customer, check your email or the website for changes. You mentioned having just $1000 in the account. If you have less than $2000, you won't...

    Questions about Refco

What are the chances that RFXCQ stock will still be worth something? If they can get $1B each for the other divisions, that'll be pretty close to its market cap last week. Not sure how much debt has yet to be discovered, though.

    RIMM Trading Halted??

Hah, the shorts over on the Yahoo board (I have no position in RIMM but read the board for amusement - I know it's just chatter) are again complaining that the price didn't go down enough on Friday, and several are calling for the SEC to investigate the trading halt, claiming it's not fair that...

NITE stop triggered in error, what can one do?

What are your broker's rules for a buy stop? As strange as it may sound, I've read about brokers who use the offer as the trigger, rather than the bid or the last trade.

    Stock Index w/ no risk?

If you do pursue this, you may want to ask the companies who are touting these structured products some questions: - do the gains count as capital gains or as interest? - do you have to pay tax only at maturity, or every year based on the current asset value?

    U. of I. study casts shadow on options trading

I'm sorry, I accidentally posted the URL for just the abstract. Full paper at http://www.business.uiuc.edu/poteshma/WorkingPapers/NiPearsonPoteshman.Jan2005.pdf. You may have read the paper already, as it's over a year old (the journal accepted it in August 2004) and a thread or two on this...

    More Bidders for REFCo

I believe the MCIP, MYG, and Unocal deals all went to the lower of the two bidders. The boards generally said they chose the offer with the best likelihood of actually going through in a reasonable period of time. MCI also said they wanted to go with the stronger company. But if RFX...

    Refco- RFX

When I heard that the hedge fund involed in this, Liberty Corner Advisors, is in Summit, NJ - the train I take to work passes through there - I looked up the address on Google and Google Maps. It turns out to be half a block from the bar that someone here said Cramer drinks at after work...

What did Cramer do to have the SEC restrict his trading???

It'd be great if the winner of the Mad Money Challenge did so solely by fading Cramer's picks.

    whats happening with RIMM??

I love how the shorts are whining on the yahoo board that RIMM didn't go down enough, and they're saying the MM's are conspiring to hold it up.

    PDT and options

The PDT rule does apply to options, and you may be surprised to find that some brokers (a) count the expiration of worthless options as a trade on the Friday before the Saturday they actually expire and (b) do not offer an exemption if the number of day trades is less than 6% of total trades...
