Good point, can't really argue with that. I think it's more true when it comes to automated trading as it is obviously easy to replicate. I guess I was thinking more of a discretionary trading where the edge is more illusive. In any case, once I acquire something of value, I may agree with you...

Yeah, and that's the challenge for most amatures ... You won't know before you spend thousands per month. And by then you are probably a few microseconds too slow anyway :)

I don't believe that. If you were talented enough to come up with a working strategy, you will come up with more. Also, you don't need to share anything proprietary, just need to point a person in the right direction. It's amazing to me how a small tweak often makes a huge difference.

Finally I got the answer, even though I have suspected this all along. Lots of fancy theories as to risk management, but at the end you are net short gamma and praying for mean revision to save you. OP, thanks for the excellent thread.
