I'd recommend from personal experience to do smaller lots, 100-200 when you move from the simulator to active trading. Because the Q's don't make very big moves, paying up for the spread (which is often necessary in order to catch the corresponding NQ move, which can be very very quick) can...

If you are merely concerned about having as much margin as possible, many firms that cater to active retail traders (i.e. IB) have substantially lower margin requirements for option spreads and hedged positions. Was that what you are asking?

I've always been under the impression that "scalping" per se means buying the bid and selling the offer.
