If you had to put your capital into...

If you had to put your capital into one asset for the next 20 years, what would that asset be: 1) Real estate (directly or REITs) 2) Corporate bonds (high grade) 3) Gold/silver (bullion, GLD) 4) Bank deposit in USD, EUR, Yen... 5) Stocks of major companies (Microsoft, Procter&Gamble...

    Cannot post a poll...

I post a thread in the trading forum "If you had to put your capital into..." and I tried to make a poll in it by checking "Yes! Post a poll" but there is no poll. I tried several times and finally posted the thread with no poll.

What could be a catalyst for a 20-30% rally?

This is a good candidate for the type of catalyst I am talking about, although it would practically create zombie banks. Either this, or nationalization. But I don't think any long term investors or hedge funds will run to buy banks (or cover shorts), if they fear a possible nationalization...

What could be a catalyst for a 20-30% rally?

Thanks for the input. I think the catalyst for the 2003 bull market was the US invasion in Iraq on March 20, 2003. I remember the mood was very negative back then, and everyone was talking the dollar and the war... As soon as the war began, the market rallied.

What could be a catalyst for a 20-30% rally?

What do you think could be the news that has the potential to spark a 20-30% rally in this market? I think (though I may be wrong), that the market cannot turn without a catalyst. Remember the reaction after the first 700bn bailout plan was rumored back in September? What if they finally...

Could this be the beginning of the end of Fractional Reserve Lending??? A major .....

This is a very powerful idea. It is definitely the next step in the evolution of society. I only hope we can get there safely.

Could this be the beginning of the end of Fractional Reserve Lending??? A major .....

Exactly! In fact, no one force the banks to keep only a fraction of their assets as reserves. The reason there are no 100% or even 20% reserve banks is because the marketplace won't sustain them for long - there are not enough customers willing to forgo the interest they can earn in their...

Could this be the beginning of the end of Fractional Reserve Lending??? A major .....

You are 100% correct. It is not convenient to keep the federal reserve notes as cash in a vault, because you can't pay by wire transfer or check. But then this is the answer to the original question - what will be the change in the current banking model? How about a bank, that has only on-demand...

Could this be the beginning of the end of Fractional Reserve Lending??? A major .....

The problem with the fractional reserve banking is that you have the right to withdraw your money at any time. We know that we can't do that all at the same time, and we know that we take a risk of a bank run. But noone forces you to keep your money in an interest earing account. You can put it...

    IB daily historical data

I see, thanks a lot. I didn't think about it, but it seems that IB TWS does not offer continuous contracts. So it can show you any contract you want (including expired) but cannot link them. Well, I guess a year of daily data for the nearby contract is the best I can get.

    cqg trader brokerage

Yes. You can go to the RCG website and check the 'Trading Platforms' section. RCG is one of the big clearing firms in Chicago. I hope you know the difference between CQG Trader and CQG Integrted Client. The CQG Trader offers DOM trading, Orders&Positions, but no charts and technical analysis...

    cqg trader brokerage

How about RCG? I don't know about overnight margin... But it is a good broker. I've heard good things about Advantage too, so do some more research to see which one is more appropriate for you. If you are an active trader, compare the commission rates they will offer, there may be as much as...

    IB daily historical data

Hi, guys. I just sent an email to IB to ask how long is the available daily history for the following futures contracts: - E-mini S&P 500 - Corn (CBOT) - Gold (COMEX) In response I received the price for the data :) So could anyone who is using IB as data feed tell me the length of...

    Best broker for the long-term?

Edit: I made some calculations about the transactions I have to make to rebalance the portfolio and it turned out that IB still beats Wells Fargo, even if you waive the $50 inactivity fee at Wells. Wells Fargo has $19.95 commission per trade. I will need about 10 trades a year to rebalance the...

You are correct, I just saw that. Thanks!

    Best broker for the long-term?

I also checked Wells Fargo. They have $50 annual account maintenance fee, but it can be waived for accounts above $25,000. This means you can practically let the stocks sit there for years and incur no costs at all (if you don't trade). Wells is not a bad proposition, but I noticed they don't...

    Best broker for the long-term?

I think the $10 fee can be avoided at IB, but I will not get any quotes on which to trade. This is not a problem, because I don't need real time quotes to open a long-term position. But I will look into Schwab and Fidelity.

    Best broker for the long-term?

I am thinking of putting some of my capital in a long-term portfolio. It will be very diversified, mostly through ETFs, and will probably be adjusted only once or twice a year. I plan to hold this portfolio for as long as I could, hopefully for many years and it will be the last that I liquidate...
