It's so sick the way the media reports on the economy. Clearly they have no idea what they're talking about. So many people blindly accept what the media has to say, so when they take a minor topic and blow it way out of proportion to sell the story, many people get excited over nothing.

While up 2%, Suncor shares (SU.TO) are still lagging the TSX by over 2%. The rise in Suncor this morning is due to the overall market being up so much and nothing else.

I think I see where you're going. Paying bonuses to those people screws nobody but the shareholders (taxpayers in this case). But at the same time paying the bonus helps retain valuable employees, therefore increasing shareholder value. The deadweight are those employees receiving a bonus...

Bonuses based on overall profit are usually for top executives only. An employee way down the food chain likely has a different performance measure other than profitability. It is entirely possible to pay a bonus to some employees without being profitable. Again, I am not agreeing with...

Agreed. But I'm sure some of those employees actually did perform well, despite the performance of AIG as a whole. Therefore, if all bonuses were not paid out/taken back, the good performers would leave the company for a company who pays bonuses, and those who didn't perform well would...

Let's be clear, it wasn't only top AIG executives getting bonuses... 70+ employees received bonuses. I'm sure not all of these were top executives and I'm sure some of those employees did actually perform well. The fact that some of AIG's employees fucked up and do not deserve a bonus...

Liddy's right... If you have the option of working for a company who pays bonuses, and one that doesn't, which would you choose? With no bonuses, AIG would be forced to hire the lowest of the low. Some might say they already have the lowest of the low, but I'm sure they could always do...
