A Bitcoin Transaction Takes Thousands of Times More Energy Than a Credit Card Swipe

Of course I'll never change your mind :)D) but every activity you listed can be easily carried out with USD, gold and silver. Well, OK, except #4. But who buys anything illegal online?

A Bitcoin Transaction Takes Thousands of Times More Energy Than a Credit Card Swipe

The new ASIC-based mining hardware is fantastically more efficient than back when Bitcoin was mined on CPUs, the graphics cards (GPUs) and then FPGAs.

A Bitcoin Transaction Takes Thousands of Times More Energy Than a Credit Card Swipe

My "imagine a world..." comment was strictly a Gedanken experiment. I might be a libertarian but certainly no fanatic. :D The "value" of Bitcoin is certainly debatable. A government-issued currency's value is based on perceived GDP growth among other things (I'm no economist). The value of...

A Bitcoin Transaction Takes Thousands of Times More Energy Than a Credit Card Swipe

Well right Bitcoin is fairly new and not well adopted yet. Heck it might even fall on its face, who knows. Supposedly the recent run-up was due to Chinese trying to evade CNY capital controls. I wouldn't think you'd be able to reasonably move more than $10K without raising red flags. But...

A Bitcoin Transaction Takes Thousands of Times More Energy Than a Credit Card Swipe

Remember that miners aren't mining Bitcoin but blocks. Miners are rewarded with Bitcoin for solving blocks but the reward decreases over time. After all the rewards are paid out, miners will continue to be paid for blocks with fees. Mining blocks to hold transactions is vital to the health of...

A Bitcoin Transaction Takes Thousands of Times More Energy Than a Credit Card Swipe

What "price"? You mean the exchange rate against the USD? That exchange rate is variable depending on the forces of supply and demand. And has nothing to do with Bitcoin itself. Hypothetically imagine a world without government issued currencies and Bitcoin was adopted as the world-wide...

A Bitcoin Transaction Takes Thousands of Times More Energy Than a Credit Card Swipe

Actually it wasn't the link I was referring to but: The factual answer to the above statement is: Yes, 21 million Bitcoins is enough to buy things. The smallest division of a Bitcoin is a Satoshi which is 10^-8 BTC. That's 2.1x10^15 Satoshis. In other words it's sufficiently divisible to...

    IB changing the Quote subscription

The US Value Bundle disappeared the day after I last posted. It's been replaced with US Securities Snapshot and Futures Value Bundle. I do mostly index options these days so luckily they didn't mess with the OPRA waiver.

One of Bitcoin's Big Funds is Selling Ahead of the ETF Decision

Pfff. The BTC ETF was a boondoggle, a red herring. BTCUSD is already back to $1200

    Setting Up Shop in Mexico

Well in OP's defense he wasn't talking about moving to Mexico to live, just to set up a business. I'm curious what OP's motivations are to start a venture like a hedge fund in Mexico particularly.

    Price WAR!

My Fidelity IRA was all Fidelity mutual funds when I first opened it (before I knew better). I've been gradually shifting my positions to commission-free iShares ETFs every re-balance since the expense ratios are so much lower. I agree Fidelity looks better and better over time.

    IBKR tightening margin

I'd say this is related to the upcoming expiration of the US debt ceiling holiday on March 15 but IB's dates start on March 20. A lot of the doomers on the internet are saying March 15 will be the end of the current bull run.
