why the big drop in the S&P after hours??

As I started feeling on Monday, we're getting to the point with this kind of market that the market's moves become a market event, or in other words the market's moves become the news. The ranges were bigger on the S&P back in Sept 01, so we aren't quite there as far as the volatility is...

    Time to get real long??

History shows that we don't have to do any thing. However, at this point the momentum appears very likely to carry us to or through that level. From here we're just a chip shot away. I'm sure there are lots of people who think they are. The question should be who has the cajones to jump in...

    tools when day-trading the minis?

You gotta understand what game you are playing. Are you playing the arb game or the speculator game? If you are playing the speculator game then you need to hit the bid/ask and forget about that one tick. That one tick can cost you big! If you are playing the speculator game and your method...

    E-mini Rookie Trading Journal

ES and NQ and some other stuff trade on the CME's electronic platform: GLOBEX. That's the exchange you will want to subscribe to. The cash indices are listed on the stock exchanges. Someone else can tell you which ones you need to subscribe to.

    which e-mini to track s&p500 ?

When the first day of the month is a Friday, the last day of trading is the 2nd Thursday. Volume moves to the new contract a week before the last trading day of the expiring contract, so it is usually best to switch over then too.

I love it when a typo adds a whole new layer of meaning.

    CME E-quotes, or something comparable?

My experience with customer support was similar to some who have posted. I had a hard time getting an answer to a few questions (several emails over several weeks). I was ignored for the most part, and only got partial answers to the rest. The CME isn't the most customer friendly.

    CME E-quotes, or something comparable?

I tried the data only version of the CME's eQuotes. There is no way to import the data into another program. It updates inside a browser which really stinks. There is no way to change the fields around or to increase the font size. The quotes were consistently slower than those provided by IB. I...

    which e-mini to track s&p500 ?

While we are on the subject let me just give a brief example of how the symbols are constructed. You take the base symbol, in this case ES for EMini S&P 500 and attach the year (2002) and the month symbol. The month symbols are as follows: H - March M - June U - September Z - December...

    which e-mini to track s&p500 ?

Rollover in the stock indices is 8 days before the 3rd Friday (expiration) of the quarter end months. As the Mini contracts have come online I've noticed that the new month contract is often very active during the preceding overnight session.

    Greenspan 6/4/02

I think Greenie's history of mucking with the markets speaks for itself.

    Spread??

Starting out with a $50 commission means you have to clear 1 point in the ES and 2.5 points in the NQ to just break even. With most direct access commissions you can clear a profit with 1 tick on either Mini. The additional cost to just do business shouldn't be underestimated. A direct access...

    Any thoughts on this article?

That's what the people who bought the Friday before Black Monday thought. It is a fallacy of logic.

    Spread??

Spread is usually 1-2 ticks - much of the time it is 1 tick.

Articles of Interest for Obsessed Traders

The article as a whole is pretty good. However, the author showed a bias against short term trading in his writing (cautions against looking at your position more than every few days). It is also interesting but perhaps coincidental that the article was copyrighted in 1999, at the height of the...
