    The S&P has topped

I personally don't think this is the top and I can honestly see another leg up - the ultimate "things are really different" leg. THEN get short.

    volatility vs directional movement

If we see a jump in IV as a result of what the market will now pay for said options, depending on how near the money it is and time to expiration, yes you're going to see an increase in option value (and vega focuses on this). If you're looking to specifically target this, then you need to be...

    Global commodity broker

Didn't they just announce they're closing NLX? I'm sure energies won't be far behind given the already existing venues. Tradator, one thing I think you should do is seriously consider what exchanges you need, what exchanges you want, and what exchanges are a nice to have. Make a literal table...

    Canadian housing bubble thread

Yeah this is why everyone is pointing it out as a clear loophole that was (intentionally?) left open. When a municipality has an incentive in the form of increased property taxes the entire thing is at odds with the local population and creates a moral hazard.

    Canadian housing bubble thread

I'm sure a few connected individuals made sure that happened. It's clear what the loophole is - and it doesn't make any sense to me that a foreign student would even be considering real estate while going to school.

    Enormous charges for data coming?

I find the fact that they would even try to get this by almost more concerning than what they were actually trying to implement.

Errr, was the smoothest. :D There's tons of gems in this thread and to forsake its length is forsaking a shitload of education.

    Canadian housing bubble thread

BMO Bundles Uninsured Mortgages in a Canadian Bond First “This is a really unique deal in the Canadian market,” Richard Hunt, an analyst at Moody’s Investors Service who rated the deal, said in an interview. “Given the pent-up demand that we think is out there on the part of banks and non-banks...

    unusual VIX term structure

Dumped the vast majority of my May 20 calls. Even though I'd love to see a VIXplosion, I think we all know how this is most likely going to go.

Software Engineer: $7,000 a year in China, $8,400 in India... $90,000 in U.S.

Yeah the number of ad-hoc examples here of "here, look at this one case where offshoring wasn't even noticed as a problem" is quite annoying. There's also a clear anti-American tendency with some folks and it's bleeding through into "there's just as many sub-par American devs as offshore ones!"...

    es vs. equally liquid instrument

If you're in the US: 1256 accounting and tax rules are a big one. More effective use of margin, no shorting restrictions, reasonably fair order book; just a much more direct instrument with less bullshit.

    New Documentary on Bill Ackman

One has to wonder what'll come first: HLF going to 0 or Ackman puking on yet another "I just know I'm right" trade? At this point it's almost as if it exists simply to inflict pain on Ackman (which of course I completely support).

Software Engineer: $7,000 a year in China, $8,400 in India... $90,000 in U.S.

Because it isn't the same talent whatsoever? Some of us have worked decades in this industry and have seen the resulting damage offshoring has caused. If you think it's anywhere near the same quality you're straight up smoking crack.

Software Engineer: $7,000 a year in China, $8,400 in India... $90,000 in U.S.

Without getting deep into it there's a certain approach to writing and designing software that requires a culturally driven approach of thinking outside the box, questioning authority, and a strong understanding of abstract concepts and how they all fit together. If you've worked with...

What risk management mistakes did Victor Niederhoffer make to blow up a few times?

Niederhoffer == gamma + leverage => death. Sprinkle a bit of AFC and Thai bank stocks in there too.
