What's a great backup and restore utility for home use?

I use Safecopy and am very satisfied. It's inexpensive and has some nice features like saving a version history and backup all your PC's to one account, but most importantly, it just works automatically, more than can be said about some other services I tried (*ahem* carbonite)

    Why is inflation so low?

A lot of the money is to "fill in" the holes from the deflation and after-effects of the 2008 debt crisis. Make balance sheets technically sound again. In other words.... the inflation already happened over the last 20 years, just need to prevent it from trying to deflate again.

Just launched my own home-brewed automated trading system. AMAA!

It's not the API throwing an exception, but if your own code in the event handler throws an exception, it's on the API call stack and the API doesn't handle it in any reasonable way ... it just disappears.

Make sure you do your own error handling (nothing is outside a try/catch) in the orderstatus function. If any error is not caught and percolates up to the IB API, it just disappears into the ether - you see nothing. At least, that was my experience with the API a couple years ago.

Backtesting and Realistic Fills for Stocks

It's a hard question, and in real life it will also depend a lot on the liquidity of the stocks, the size of your order, and so on. You can take a deductive approach ... code and test two new versions of your system A. Buy/sell at market when the stock hits your buy/sell point B. Buy/sell at...

    Alarm when losing RDP connection

Oh I see. In my mind it's better to put your effort into having a backup alarm (i.e. directly to your cell phone over the internet), or even two backup alarms, rather than try to eliminate every point of failure for each alarm. As for your original question, sorry I don't know, maybe a macro...

    Alarm when losing RDP connection

Why do you care about losing RDP when you are sleeping? You wake up and do what? Wouldn't you only want to wake up if your trading platform loses the data or trading connection? FWIW I find that Teamviewer is a lot faster and more reliable from Asia.

How do HFTs screw small hidden limit orders posted inside the spread?

I don't know about with IB, but with dark pool routes you can often trade at midpoint. Also break your orders up into 100 share increments will give you better luck. Beyond that ... you are trying to grab the same pennies that HFT is going for, and you're not likely to win at that game.

SEC to Congress: Nonsense, the markets are not rigged.

You can use level II to see where the liquidity is, how many shares you are likely able to get, and route directly. Do you even trade?

Firms for equities trading with the Lightspeed c++ API (prop or retail)

I was in the same boat, a former Genesis client, I also talked to lightspeed but ended up with remotedaytrader.com. The website looks tacky until you realize they are basically offering a WTS prop account or retail account (yes WTS can do retail now, it's called WorldX or something). So far...

    A Career Transition into Trading

    - do you have an edge, such that you believe you can be successful? - a risk adverse approach isn't an edge, it will just help you stay in the game - 3 months isn't long enough to predict the long term success or failure of an edge. It is only long enough to prove that you can execute.

    Retail routing to IEX exchange

I'd like to know, does IEX route out, and if so, do they "thor" it?

    HFT Myths

+1 .... this is what the "I'll start making money when they ban the HFT's and stop losing a penny on every trade!" crowd needs to understand. If you are a small retail trader using market orders, HFT RARELY affects you - - Almost all retail market orders are internalized anyway, and executed at...

    Whitehouse.gov petition to ban HFT

"Ban market exchanges from giving High Frequency Traders faster market access and front running orders." Wow, with such a well thought out proposal, I can't wait to see the government solution, especially if they come up with anything beyond a "hey, stop that!"

    IB SMART Routing and BATS/HFT

Are your orders inside/outside/at the spread? But generally with 100 share orders, you don't have anything to worry about.

That's a good plan, but don't overload yourself and lose the ability to think about each strategy individually. If two or more strategies go south at the same time, you need to be able to evaluate each one independently. Or if you have a losing strategy, but the losses are more than absorbed by...

Yes, during the good times just remember that bad times WILL come, during the bad times remember that good times WILL come again (as long as you avoid getting blown out of the game). It's a fascinating journey that never gets old, good luck.

So how did it go, any glitches on your first day? I'm guessing it made money, and no big problems, so you're feeling altruistic and a little bored :)
