    Midnight rally

One of the keys to any system is having the right position size. While being short bonds the couple of days hurts, my position is small enough so that it doesn't inflict too much pain. Of course that limits my profit potential, but I have reward to risk equations that determine exactly how big...

    Midnight rally

If I told you, I'd have to kill you. I have a quant system using both fundamentals and technicals. The details are a secret (so those of you who think I am full of crap, can believe that). My system has been short bonds since June 24th when the yield was 4.05%. It sucks giving back some of...

    Midnight rally

Also short ZN. Got hit the last couple of days, but the previous 5 weeks sure were a good run. I think the ZN should drop some more....

Living on a boat and avoiding taxes

You can trade futures from an IRA. But you can't short stocks.

    CPI numbers

But the "this time it's different" crowd can be right for quite a long time. This low long-term interest rate environment has been "different" from the norm for quite some time.

    Excel DDE + IB

I use DDE to load nine tickers and four account pages (connecting to four open TWS instances) into an Excel spreadshset. I never have problems with lost data.

    CPI numbers

And as a result, the 10-year yield will go down some more....

    Excel DDE + IB

But how do you use the Java API to get the data into Excel?

Why we will rally again today.

Today it doesn't feel good. But it's worked since I put on the positions (went short bonds on 7/1 and short stocks on 7/29).

Why we will rally again today.

If bonds start moving up (and I don't mean a one-day move), then stocks should rise as well. But if bonds start down again, stocks will most likely drop. I'm short both stocks and bonds right now....

Why we will rally again today.

Today: Gold up, oil up, strong economic reports--> Bonds up. That's just crazy.

Anyone see the (Traders under 30" on CNBC

"This Trader magazine is obviously full of crap." I receive the magazine for free. I would never pay for it. I enjoy some of the articles, but most are crap.

Anyone see the (Traders under 30" on CNBC

"I have a friend in Hinsdale, IL (lot of Chicago traders live there) who works from his friggin mansion (20,000 sq ft home) who makes about 7 Million per year trading bonds. Everyone in Hinsdale knows him. Very hard to keep a secret between 2 people unless one of them is dead. " Well, if you...

Anyone see the (Traders under 30" on CNBC

"If I recall, last year a famous hedge fund manager in NY was kidnapped and held for ransom. I'll try and find a link." That was Edward Lampert in Greenwich, Conn.

Maybe his problem is his English and not his psychology. Or maybe you are over-analyzing things. Us "lay" people understood what Kastro meant.

Anyone see the (Traders under 30" on CNBC

This is *a* list, not *the* list. If somebody working out of his house made $100M trading, how would they know about it? I know that if/when I was making millions trading my own and some family money (all privately), I wouldn't tell anybody.

I'm just surprised I am not on the list.... Oh well, maybe next year.

who would hire an independent trader?

Most list PHD in math, statistics, or financial engineering. Even the jobs that don't require a PHD, you are still competing against those people. Some just say "advanced degree" so that would work with an MBA in the right area.

who would hire an independent trader?

You might have some trouble get a job with a hedge fund or institution. I'm also a system developer. I went looking for a hedge fund/institutional job, but most want PHDs for the quant/system development area. Here's a good list of hedge fund positions available...
