Why don't rich people manage their own money?

You underestimate the number of households who made their millions from nothing. Being born poor can be a huge motivator.

ECB member Juergen Stark : Markets Can’t Assume Rest of EU Will Rescue Greece

Let's just say if the PIGS had their own currency (EUR SOUTH) and Germany, Benelux, France & Finland had another (EUR NORTH) then the PIGS one would likely trade at a fraction of the EUR NORTH. That is probably true for any large economic region including the United States, but my point is that...

ECB member Juergen Stark : Markets Can’t Assume Rest of EU Will Rescue Greece

An overnight, rapid collapse in asset prices and wages sounds good in economic theory to bring about a supply/demand equilibrium, but would likely cause civil unrest. The Germans are aware of this, and would hate nothing more than their European pipe dream of peace and happiness going up in...

    Career advice for salaried worker

The health aspect is an excellent point. I had the opposite experience weight-wise though, I think when I worked in under two years I gained (!) over 25 pounds. I used to be very active outdoors, I went to the gym a lot, but once I started working I just felt so burned out from all the...

8800 dow wow Where is the Floor

Boom and bust periods and incredible bubbles and depressions all over the world are part of economic history of the last 250 years, IMO they are not unique to the last two decades. Just remember to trade it long on the way up and short on the way down, not the other way around

    Career advice for salaried worker

The day I quit my first and only salaried job after university will forever remain in memory. I can perfectly relate to your feelings. I felt burned out after a short 18 months. I thought it was the long hours, later I realized I just wasn't cut out for a corporate career lifestyle. The hours...

Little Iceland kicks UK in the face

Pushing small countries around? Warning? Iceland went belly up, maybe you missed the news. Iceland should be nuked instead of just pushed around, as a warning to others.

ECB member Juergen Stark : Markets Can’t Assume Rest of EU Will Rescue Greece

I read some article the other day about an internal meeting the German Bundesbank (their central bank) had about how to deal with potential PIGS defaults and to their shock their legal experts advised them there is no way to kick out a EUR zone member state from the currency union, regardless of...

Its surreal as 1 in 8 on food stamps but people fighting for iphones

I would assume the metric of "dollars spent at the cinema per visitor" (including soda, popcorn, nachos etc.) is painting quite a different picture than record box office sales. You can head to the movies and easily double your total expenses by loading up on gallons of drinks and a few pounds...

Its surreal as 1 in 8 on food stamps but people fighting for iphones

Gone with the Wind came out in the late 30s I believe, in the middle of some of the toughest economic times. Adjusted for inflation it is the highest grossing movie ever.

Why are living standards in the western world still far ahead of emerging countries?

Your example makes a terrible mistake in confusing questioning authority with genuine curiosity. Many of the kids that were taught to question any type of authority early on by their 70s generation hippie parents end up in psychological therapy.

    Any Berlin (Germany) Traders?

IIRC, the labor productivity in the former communist part of Germany today is still below the levels of e.g. the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic didn't receive a trillion Euros in transfer payments to build a high quality infrastructure, yet they were better at catching up with the West. An...

    Any Berlin (Germany) Traders?

Try Munich. It's the "Anti-Berlin", but still cosmopolitan, lots of high quality dining and arts/culture events, very safe for a big city, good infrastructure. Mountains (alps) and lakes (Starnberg) are less than an hour away. Rents and cost of living are probably 50%+ higher than Berlin though.
