Margin Requirements and Zero-Cost Factor Portfolios

I'm not familiar with reg T, that is mostly for small accounts. Portfolio Margin is what someone implementing such a strategy would use. The amount of cash you need is 15% of gross exposure. In other words 6.66:1 leverage. e.g. $1M cash deposit => $3.33M long + 3.33M short = 6.66M gross you...

Another day trader bites the dust

Yeah. I know now, but I did not know as a newb 10 years ago. If you pick stocks randomly you will dramatically underperform the indexes. Here's an excellent paper that explains why: http://csinvesting.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Bessembinder-Do-Stocks-Outperform-Treasury-Bills.pdf If you...

Another day trader bites the dust

Okay. I already acknowledged that options are a good way to blow up. You'd think Op would mention options if that's what happened. It's not a common definition of day trading. Trading stocks it is almost impossible to reach 0 unless you're basically trying on purpose to lose it all. Maybe Op...

Another day trader bites the dust

"Losing $450,000" =/= "losing 100% of your account" OP said this guy was a successful position trader with 6 years experience. So clearly he is not clueless about risk management? Even if you are extremely reckless, the account will not literally reach 0 unless you have a leveraged blow up, or...

Another day trader bites the dust

Did not read the whole thread. I'm very skeptical of this story. Or some important details are missing. The implication seems to be that the friend is a smart guy (profitable position trader for 6 years implies significant competence), but day trading somehow turned him into a retard. OP also...

Calling for A High on the Russell @1616.60

You predicted trump would move the markets down with his tweet about no stimulus deal till after the election? Wow you are truly a prophet.

    Margin Increase

Guys, relax - just make 35% less profits for no good reason whatsoever. If your ship is that tight, you should thank IB for screwing you up the *** and loosening you up a bit.

Limelight Holdings LLC Announces Record Full-Year Results-Proposed Name Change from Lime Brokerage

Zero evidence. Zero credibility. You joined the forum just to post this? Why even bother?

What's the best timeframe for using TA?

If the definition of "TA" is using past price movements to future predict price movements, then yes, TA works. Price information has predictive power in certain contexts. In my experience you need a bunch of computer power to extract this information. If the definition is drawing a bunch of...

Brokerage Firms With Personalized (human!) Customer Service?

Wow. Why is this kept a secret? This would have been great to know a year ago. I'm in the process of moving to a different broker (for other reasons) so too late for me, but this will be very useful knowledge for someone.

Brokerage Firms With Personalized (human!) Customer Service?

I don't think this is actually true. I do something about $1000 a day (not week) in comms and they still treat me the same as always. On hold forever and then good luck getting elevated to someone who isn't a drooling moron. Maybe my account is flagged or something, hahah.

    Margin Increase

Wow, seriously IB? I'm in the middle of migrating to a different broker over the previous fiasco but I don't think I can get it done in time. Looks like you got me again.

why are there no other brokers compete directly with IB?

You do a lot of very consistent volume don't you? Try negotiating and see what you can get.

why are there no other brokers compete directly with IB?

There absolutely are not lots of traders like you, whose needs are not met or exceeded by IB. This is the 3rd thread you've started on this topic. People have repeatedly referred you to Lightspeed and @rmorse . Have you spoken with him yet? What requirements is Lightspeed not fitting for you?

    Paper trading for a year!

LOL. You know what I mean tho ;) This is statement is wrong at a very deep level. Everything that is predictable to any extent is by definition a function of what happened in the past. In other words, from the point of view of someone living in the present, what happened historically is the...

    Paper trading for a year!

If trading was like driving a car, then everybody would be able to do it. A driver knows with almost complete certainty what is coming next. Car physics are simple and even intuitive, and can be described well by a few simple equations. Trading is the polar opposite of this, with most outcomes...

    Paper trading for a year!

Most of those are small events. Only Lehmann (aka Global Financial Crisis) and Covid-19 really count here. If you are 30 you probably weren't old enough to trade through Lehmann. So there has been only one once-in-a-lifetime vol event in your adult or "trading" life (career) so far.

    Paper trading for a year!

Paper trading tells you if your execution systems are working and possibly lets you verify your friction/slippage assumptions. It should not be used for statistical significance, and indeed can't practically be used that way because it takes too long. Especially for a weekly system.. forget...

Can I trade stocks without any broker ? How much money I need to open my own clearing firm ?

Like I said, you guys are talking past eachother. He is talking about futures and you are talking about stocks. They don't work the same way. Futures have leverage without debt, stocks do not.
