    IEX is now the exchange

Ok, but if you are a retail trader and the NBBO does not involve an IEX quote, then it seems like HFT will just screw you over just like before (assuming your broker just routes to the NBBO exchange). So I guess I should hope IEX takes close to 100% market share so that HFTs go extinct.

    IEX is now the exchange

Before this, I could route orders to IEX. Now that IEX is an "exchange," what does that imply? Does it mean that I can now see IEX quotes in the national best bid/offer? Why does this become an HFT killer when I could route orders to IEX before it became an exchange?

Lost Money Trading but Now I Owe $2Million in Tax

You have no records of brokerage statements or financial transactions that happened between the now broke brokers and your regular bank accounts? You could show the amount you deposited and the amount you withdrew from the brokerages would not total up to $2M in profits. Do you track your...

Lost Money Trading but Now I Owe $2Million in Tax

That really isn't the issue. In 2013, you needed to alert the IRS that their calculations were wrong (and prove it). Waiting 3 years makes it seem like you were hoping that this problem would go away on its own. It does not take money to research your own financial history. As it stands, you...

Lost Money Trading but Now I Owe $2Million in Tax

I think the real problem in this particular case is that the IRS sent him a bill of 2 million in 2013 and the OP just let the IRS close the case as "not collectible" instead of fighting the initial ruling. Now when he has made some money, the IRS is going after it even though their original...

Lost Money Trading but Now I Owe $2Million in Tax

This is why I have kept all my tax records and financial statements since I started filing. You need to be able to show your financial history in terms of buys and sells of stock to prove you are in the right. Hopefully you kept these records.

What happens when a company gets bought and you are caught short?

No liquidity at all. The move happened in pre-market and was almost instantaneous. There were no offers to get out on once the bids started to pile in. Well, except for the offers at $195. The computers probably took out the standing offers faster than you could blink.

How does safe harbor work for estimated taxes?

Don't think so. You should probably look up what safe harbor means. In this case, the OP will not owe an estimated tax penalty even if he pays no estimated taxes. He will owe a balance at year end, but that is a separate question.

    Alternatives to Nanex

Read this thread: http://www.elitetrader.com/et/index.php?threads/another-thread-on-real-time-data-api-solutions.299375/ If you go to the Nanex forum, it talks about a Java wrapper that has already been written but you'll need to contact Nanex about it. I am not sure it is for real, but it is...

I totally agree. Did Alan Farley graduate from middle school? In order to author a book, you need to be able to write in a language of your choosing. Did his editor resign?

does it EVER make sense to buy and hold a 3X bull ETF ?

My advice is don't do it. Buy silver yourself (with a vehicle that you are comfortable with) and just hold it. Do not buy and hold a leveraged ETF for long periods of time.

BitCoin Use Safety, Very Basic Question.

In my opinion, Coinbase is probably the easiest way to get started in the USA. You can trade Bitcoin using Coinbase's exchange GDAX: https://www.gdax.com/ Look at their demo to see approximate volumes on the bid and offer. There are probably more liquid exchanges, but I haven't looked into it...
