    R vs MATLAB

No they are both unique high-level languages. Most of the quantitative stuff in R is written internally in fast C code now. (It is only fast if you can process whole lists/arrays at a time so you have to write your code that way for fastest performance, avoiding explicit loops where possible.)

Hoadley Trading & Investment Tools... ???

I realize that you are probably not a programmer, but for those who are, a sample Excel application that creates an option chain file that can be imported into the option chain component of Hoadley can be downloaded from the hoadley.net web site at...

PFG freezes accounts, CEO attempts suicide

Unfortunately brokers currently only have to post margin on the net positions of all of their customers. So if longs and shorts in say the emini are about equal among a broker's customers, the broker has to post only a minimal amount of margin with its clearing firm and/or the exchange...

Hoadley Trading & Investment Tools... ???

I have written API code to export option chains in the format required by Hoadley from another broker and platform (not IB), I am not offering the code but just mentioning that is feasible. Then I will be totally independent of commercial data providers.

    R vs MATLAB

I do not trade through R directly and do not use IB. If you do, there is the R IBrokers package. http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/IBrokers/IBrokers.pdf However I myself think R is best for analysis and I would actually execute using other software.

canada based brokers + IB question

You cannot always judge a book by its cover, as the saying goes. They are a very high-end broker catering to high-end investors (and others). Albert Friedberg was often quoted in Barons on energy trading. I have had accounts at Friedberg some years ago. They offer just about every futures...

None. It is an Alberta Securities Commission rule. They used the IIROC of accredited investor in their rule.

no more forex trading in canada

The thread should say "in Alberta" not "in Canada". Obviously this is a decision of the Alberta Securities Commission. https://fxtrade.oanda.com/community/forex-forum/topic/16012917/

canada based brokers + IB question

I should add that Friedberg is not exactly a direct-access broker. You might still be able to work something out with them, though, depending on account size and the type of trading you do, if you explain what your goal is; namely, having the benefit of the Canadian insurance. Maybe they can...

canada based brokers + IB question

Well IB has a HK presence so any accounts of HK residents will have to be opened using the proper account domicile, forms, disclosures and regulations etc. applicable to HK residents. This may extend to BVI also although I am surprised if so. Probably IB refers all non-Canadian accounts to...

canada based brokers + IB question

Canadian brokers are unable to accept U.S. accounts because the CFTC forbids it and prosecutes foreign brokers who accept accounts of U.S. residents. The CFTC has a dozen law suits against foreign brokers currently underway against foreign brokers who accepted U.S. clients.

    Intraday Futures Spreads margin requirement

There are internal symbols but you do not normally use them - you just quote and execute the spread as a combination or leg in, either way. It sounds as if your broker platform is inadequate for trading spreads,

    Intraday Futures Spreads margin requirement

Probably his broker is not re-computing margins during the day. Some do not and do not even recognize spreads when they are creating by legging in one side at a time. I think that that is what he is describing.

    Intraday Futures Spreads margin requirement

Absolutely. The margins for spreads are much lower. This applies both intra-day and overnight. However, some broker platforms will not show the lower margins intraday because they have not programmed it in. In this case, if you talk to your broker's risk department, they will normally...

PFG - What happens if you have accounts with them??

The real question is, is there much money left, or assets or insurance of PFG or anyone involved here to recover. Or are they all "judgment proof." We know that there is the margin money held by Jefferies. That will be recovered. But are there more large pots of money elsewhere? One...
