I don't know that you need to link profiting to advertising to violate the TOS here. I think advertising is banned, not profiting from the advertisement. In his mind, gaining more people to "follow him" on the Yahoo board is profit, since that seems to be the way he measures his success.

He was promoting his Yahoo group within the thread. I think that is considered advertising.
