    Quant Curious

What's the problem with university classes? Are you in the US? One thing I like here is that pretty much anyone can have a go at some classes - even if you did miserably in high school -- i.e. community college to brush up on basics. If you want free materials, How about MIT...

    Colocation host for trading

If I had an ATS that would run Linux-based, I might look at using Amazon's Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2) as a budget option. It's more for those who have some technical knowledge. It's robust in that it's the same infrastructure that handles Amazon's business. http://aws.amazon.com/ec2

Were Mean Reversion traders down today?

I think there's more to it than hoping prices RTM. I think the mean prices may be considered areas of value as determined by the auction process. When prices move but then fail to establish a new area of value (volume at those prices dries up) - it makes sense for prices to revert back to...

    Backing up a computer

With my ISP, it was about a gig per hour. I've seen references to folks getting much faster speeds - like 3GB in 10 minutes - so I'm guessing it was some throttling on my side. In any case, I run a backup once a day from my desktop and every 15 minutes from my laptop. Those differential...

    Let rate the following API

FYI From what I've heard Ass ent wants 30K in equity in order to allow API trading. Not sure why.

Were Mean Reversion traders down today?

May I ask what software do they use? I've been calculating cross-hedge betas in excel to get the best balance -- # shares of a stock and appropriate ETF. I have a couple of names that seem to work well. Next step is to expand the number of stocks I can do it with.

    Need help understanding Diversification

Well I think you'll want to become familiar with a few concepts. You'll want to know not just how diversification effects how risky your portfolio is, but what is the best proportion of the different securities to take the least risk for a given return. If you assume that changes in prices...

    Backing up a computer

Well it's not for backing up your porn collection or whatever. :D The idea is to have the backups run regularly, be offsite in case of disaster at house, be accessible from anywhere (access my home files from work, vice versa). Data transfer in is $.10/GB and out is $.17/GB. The biggest...

    Genesis Prop Firms

I've been with another prop firm 1 month, have series 7 & 63 and am getting 55 soon. Most of my capital is locked up for another 11 months there. I have been doing some system development kicking the tires on OpenQuant. I like it and I intend to deploy an ATS with it. OpenQuant works...

    Backing up a computer

I've really enjoyed using JungleDisk - which is software that runs on top of Amazon's S3 service and costs $20. You can set it to be encrypted. The cost is $.15/mo per GB. So, a 20GB backup costs $3/mo. It will save 60 days of history by default but can be set to save versions as long as you...

    ANVIL API (Assent) Developer Thread

FYI I learned that OpenQuant uses QuickFIX to connect to a trading technologies FIX adapter and others have been able to use that as an example to make their own FIX implementation. So, I believe it's doable but will require some elbow grease on my part.

    ANVIL API (Assent) Developer Thread

Is there a bridge between OpenQuant or any of the retail strategy development platforms and the Anvil API?

Stock trading arcades/Prop Firms in Chicago that ask for less than $25,000?

Getting licensed shouldn't cost $1500 -- is that for a bunch of premium test prep material? And I don't think they'd start charging you for the platform while you are taking tests. I'm sure Echo is competitive and you could call Assent, too.
