1,000 people living in tunnels under Las Vegas

Soilent Green? You raise some interesting points. I've often wondered whether welfare short-circuits evolution. On the other hand, the whole concept of private ownership in some sense warps the idea of pure evolution. If I am allowed to pass all my belongings on to my progeny, who did nothing...

1,000 people living in tunnels under Las Vegas

I lived in LV for almost 10 years and I really liked it; as far as I know, I'm not the lowest class of person. Once you get away from the strip/downtown areas, it is very much like any other city (except the slot machines in grocery stores, that always seemed wierd). I left in '07 as the housing...

Volcker:Bernanke is a fool, condemned to repeat history

von Mises: Bernanke is a fool, condemned to repeat history "There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as a result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later...

WTF ? Cant believe market is going up like this !!!

I believe things will end badly for the market as well; who knows WHEN the music will stop. I started scaling out of some longs when we first hit 1100, thinking we would get a pullback. We've just been hanging around ever since. Something has been nagging at me to take more profits and wait for...

WTF ? Cant believe market is going up like this !!!

You sound like me in '06-'07. I started liquidating all my long stock "investments" in IRA/brokerage accounts somewhere during that time frame, probably 15-20% from the top. Then I just stewed as I watched the market grind up for weeks at a time.

    Consumers dropping pay TV

You are right, they can always find a way to repackage these bundles such that it is easy to say, "hmm, for only another $15, I'll get all this extra stuff!" I think I am paying about $25 bucks (on top of a practically useless land-line phone) for some pretty slow AT&T dsl. I keep the land-line...

What ever happened to all the complaining over "too big to fail"?

I think the time is now to reset awareness over this issue. I haven't heard anyone talking about it during the elections--I guess a lot of the politicians are already bought and paid for?

What ever happened to all the complaining over "too big to fail"?

Has everyone forgotten about this until the next financial implosion? Now that we will have some new blood in Congress, maybe its time to start hammering our reps. regarding these megabanks. Does "too big to fail" = "too big to succeed"? It seems as though investors have not benefitted at all...

    Consumers dropping pay TV

It looks like more people are jumping off the bandwagon. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Cable-subscribers-flee-but-is-apf-3875814716.html?x=0 Its been two months now since I dropped Charter in favor of a cheap Radio Shack antenna and Netflix. You know what, I haven't missed it a bit...

Poll: Someone explain me why this would not have worked better than the stimulus.

why would liberals want to argue with you? maybe conservatives would argue as well. I think I am fairly liberal in my views and I think your idea has some merit. I'm just as pissed as anybody that so much $$ was dumped into so many politician's pet projects. It seems pretty hard to...

Democrats can chose the next president.

If the economy is still sputtering in 2012 then I think Obama gets beat. If the economy is picking up steam and unemployment rate is falling, then he probably gets reelected, assuming we are not still stepping in sh-t in the Middle East. If you look at the last few presidents who didn't win a...

If Chuck Norris were the FED chairman

After working with new Fed chairman Chuck Norris this week, economists discovered that there IS a FREE LUNCH after all...and if some kind of raw meat is not served with that lunch, then someone near Chuck's table is probably going to lose a spleen.

Pontiac going out of business today after 84 years.

I swapped my Lemans + $1500 for a '71 Chevelle. The guy who got my old Pontiac used it in a destruction derby. Wouldn't mind having that Chevelle back either, now that I think about it.

Election surprise: Jim Rogers lost to incumbent Republican

He should have just hidden his face entirely and used the campaign slogan from "The Distinguished Gentleman": VOTE FOR JIM ROGERS--THE NAME YOU KNOW!

    Fast Track to Inequality

Why am I expecting a wave of posts accusing the OP of being some kind of anti-capitalist pinko liberal? OK, I'll save everyone the trouble and play devil's advocate here, "come on now, every patriotic American is for rugged individualism. If you have the education, ambition, unrelenting...

Why do people wear sunglasses indoor?

Here's the multiple choice answers to the question as to why people wear sunglasses indoors: 1. you have no other convenient way to carry them and don't want to lose or damage the sunglasses. 2. you can't see or have some kind of medical condition that requires the sunglasses. 3. you...

Selling fine jewelry--any ideas on how to get a fair price?

LEAPup thanks for the reply, I have been in contact with the jeweler; we visited them fairly regularly when we lived in Las Vegas, and they seem like very good people. I'm not sure how business has been there since Vegas got hit pretty hard over the past few years (we left in '07). In the...

Selling fine jewelry--any ideas on how to get a fair price?

Thanks all for your replies! Acronym I hear what you are saying, and I don't really expect to get full price out of the deal. My soon-to-be ex will get the $$ anyway, as far as I am concerned I gave her the ring and it is hers to do as she wishes. I always laugh to myself when people talk...
