    IB Secure Device

I disagree. If not this forum, some other public forum is the best place to discuss security threats and possible solutions. Thieves will be reading the discussion, no doubt. But they're not going to quit looking for vulnerabilities. Our objective should not be perfect security, but merely...

    IB Secure Device

I like this idea, so I submitted an request for enhancement. The filtering need not be complex (e.g. no penny stocks, no thin markets, etc) and could apply to only opening transactions.

I can see how hedged accounts will benefit from portfolio margining. Is there much benefit for unhedged accounts, especially if they hold a lot of high-beta issues?

    IB Secure Device

I understand why IB is doing this, and I applaud their concern for security. The device has been in use for some time and is a proven technology. I expect a lot of complaining, however. The device has tiny keys, a fairly poor display, and is not always easy to use. I too am concerned about...

IB waaay behind on tech support?

I had a similar problem and concluded the it was with the cable service. I changed modems, and it seem to get a little better. When I switched to DSL, I never had another disconnect. Cable disconnects seems to be more common with the older 3mbps service.

IB waaay behind on tech support?

IB has had some support problems in the past, but the last several times I have called, the support rep was prompt, knowledgeable, and polite. This forum is probably not the best place to diagnose and fix support issues.

It is most likely stale quotes on your data feed, but it could also be caused by problems at the ECN.

    IB Tax Documents

The 1099 is the only tax form a broker is required to provide, and IB's 1099 has always been correct for me. The Schedule D-1 is a freebie. I appreciate their trying, but I found it to be totally useless, so I toss it. I track my performance daily and monthly using Excel. At year end I...

IB waaay behind on tech support?

I did the manual update, then changed the registry, and I am still getting the message on every restart.

    WHO is the CTA

It is my understanding that you can call yourself a CTA as soon as your registration is complete with the NFA. The CFTC gets its information from the NFA, so you don't deal with them directly. You can solicit QECs and QEPs without a ddoc, but you need to file a waiver with the NFA. Otherwise...

    Setting up a CPO

CME (http://www.cme.com/) put out a free booklet in the mid-90's entitled, "How to Become a CTA". They may still have some copies available. The info is dated, but you might get some useful tips. CPO accounting can be pretty complex (and expensive). CTAs are allowed to combine trades for...

    WHO is the CTA

When you register as a corporation, the corporation is the CTA, and you are an "associated person" (AP) as well as a principal of that CTA. You register both yourself and the corporation with the NFA, and you get two I.D. numbers. Once your registration and disclosure document are accepted...

    Early Morning Trading

You need an EDAT broker: http://daytrading.about.com/cs/educationtraining/a/be_a_trader5.htm Many people here use IB (http://www.interactivebrokers.com/), but most daytrading brokers will do.

    Need advice

The PDT rule was imposed by the SEC, so no U.S. broker can ignore it. Alldaytraders.com is located outside the U.S. Find a better non-U.S. broker, and you should be in business.

    Taxes at IB

OEX options qualify for Section 1256 treatment (and 60/40 tax treatment). They are summarized on Form 6781, not reported on Schedule D. NB: IB's new Schedule D incorrectly includes OEX options if you traded them. I also trade stocks, and I use TradeKeeper to prepare the Schedule D. I...
