Does "recommended starting capital" mean margined or not?

I know. I've been on message boards for a long time and I know there's always some people like that. Besides, he PMed me and told me that I could borrow against his credit cards to fund my account. See? He's a nice guy :D

Does "recommended starting capital" mean margined or not?

If I trade $2k at a prop firm i'd be out a max of $2k. My plan with trading $30k of my own would have me out a max of $5k. I know that's a bit more, but still.

Thank you to the people that gave me serious answers.

Does "recommended starting capital" mean margined or not?

Yes, that's why I was starting with $30k. I figure if I lose $5k then trading probably isn't for me and I'll just close my account. Plus, I'd like a safety net cuz if I start with $25k and lose $0.01 on the first day, I'd hate to have my account frozen at $24,999.99. I wasn't planning on...

    Stuff I've wondered about

Yeah, I don't even want to touch futures. Why ETFs? Is there a significant difference between trading ETFs and trading stocks? I have SPY as a long term holding right now but it's like ~$125 a share. That's a bit expensive for what I'm looking at to day trade.

Does "recommended starting capital" mean margined or not?

When someone says "you need at least x amount of money to day trade successfully," are they referring to after the 4:1 margin rate or not. When I start, I'm going to begin with $30k, which will be $120k margined. I've heard people recommend $50k-$100k as a good starting point, but if that's...

    Stuff I've wondered about

I'm not saying I would never hold long term positions. I have some now that I've been holding since I started trading in 1/05. Does anyone know the difference between stocks on the different exchanges?

    Stuff I've wondered about

So you're saying trading 1000 shares for 20 cents is only possible if there is a ton of volume, right? I usually follow stocks with volume of at least 1-5M. Is that enough? I've also heard of people paper trading successfully but then losing money when they go to start for real because they...

    Stuff I've wondered about

I see what you mean about all the action in the open. What do the lines you drew over volume mean? Why are they opposite of the channels you drew on the price? I'm confused. What is the "tape?" The ticker tape? I didn't think they used that anymore. If I trade online where can I see...

    Stuff I've wondered about

^ Thank you for the replies! How are taxes different on ETFs vs. regular stocks? I thought ETFs were the same as stocks for all intents and purposes. They were for me when I did my taxes last year  And my other question: Is there a significant difference between stocks on...

    Stuff I've wondered about

Sorry, one more question: Is there a significant difference between stocks on the different markets? Why would someone only trade NYSE stocks but not AMEX, for example?

    Stuff I've wondered about

1000 share volume for my position, not total shares traded.

    Stuff I've wondered about

Yeah, that's why I'm just paper trading for intraday stuff now :) I'd switch to IB or something before I actually started daytrading. If you buy a stock and then sell it for a loss, and then buy it back again within 30 days, you have to do some stuff differently when you file taxes...

    Stuff I've wondered about

Why? It's not that I have a problem with making decisions, I just think this would be simpler. What do you mean by "heavy volume?" Is 1000 shares enough? $0.20 per share on 1000 shares is $200. Why wouldn't that work? I know my math is right, so I must be missing something else...

    Stuff I've wondered about

I've been paper trading for a while now, and swing/long term trading with real money from a Scottrade account for about 1.5 years now, but before I start actually day trading I want to make sure I know as much as I can. I've been reading these forums for a while now, and I've learned a ton...
